warnings: none"hey bin?"
"what's up?"
"let's bake a cake."
"why?"
"i want cake."
"we could buy one."
"but we could bake one."
"but we could buy one."
"no."
changbin knew that he would never win against jisung in an argument like this. not only was jisung stubborn as hell, but changbin also gave into his boyfriend very easily.
"you make sure we have all the ingredients, and we'll make a cake."
"yes!"
jisung jumped up and immediately ran to the kitchen, pulling a cake recipe up and searching for each ingredient. he laid the bags and boxes out on the counter, mentally checking them off in his head. when everything was there, he called changbin to the kitchen.
"really?" changbin stared at the copious ingredients in front of them. "i didn't even know we had half this shit."
jisung shrugged his shoulders and immediately got to work measuring out the dry ingredients. as he did, he told changbin to read the instructions for the wet ingredients.
"what the fuck are wet and dry ingredients."
"literally what they sound like. ingredients that are dry, like flour, and ingredients that are wet, like milk."
feeling a little stupid, changbin read through the recipe and began combining everything very carefully. he had never really used the electric stand mixer that his mother had gifted him, so he didn't really know what was going on.
as jisung measured out the flour and baking soda, changbin attempted to mix the butter and sugar together. soon, he called jisung over.
"is this what it's supposed to look like?"
it looked like he'd mashed up butter and covered it in sugar.
"i'm gonna go with no."
the two looked at the pictures attached.
"how the fuck are you supposed to make that out of butter and sugar?" jisung exclaimed.
"sungie, did you get the butter from the freezer?"
"yeah, that's where we keep it."
"that's why. it hard. so we can't mix it."
"oooh."
the two decided to wait a few minutes and eventually just began beating it again, figuring that the butter would soften on its own.
finally, with the butter and sugar combined, they added the eggs one at a time. then, the vanilla. when the wet mixture was complete, they poured in some of the dry ingredients and mixed it together. they did the same with the milk and when they added more of the dry ingredients, jisung set the mixer too high and the two were immediately coated in flour.
"jisung!"
"sorry! i don't know how to use this thing!"
"i don't either but i know that turning the knob makes it go faster! do you know what faster means when baking?"
jisung gestured to the two of them.
"exactly."
they cleaned themselves off and changed, jisung saying sorry several times and clinging to changbin, who acted mad for a little while before relenting to jisung's loving antics. when they were ready to get back to baking, changbin ruffled jisung's hair, sending more flour cascading to the floor.
once they added the rest of the dry ingredients they decided to mix it with a spatula so they didn't over-mix the batter and to avoid another incident.
jisung greased the pans generously with butter and flour, not so casually sneaking glances at changbin's arms as he mixed the batter. when he poured the batter into the pans, jisung wrapped his arms around his torso, pressing his face into changbin's back and inhaling the his cologne as well as the vanilla he denied spilling on himself.
"did we preheat the oven?"
"shit." he said, muffled by changbin's shirt.
changbin began laughing and walked to the oven, punching in 375 while jisung was still latched onto him.
the two waited a few minutes before popping the cakes in and ecided to watch a show while they waited. as soon as they sat on the couch, changbin laid his head on jisung's lap and focused his attention to the tv.
after just one episode, they heard the oven beep.
"wait, do we have oven mitts?" jisung asked as changbin got up.
"towels should be fine, right?"
towels were not fine, changbin soon found out. his hands were fine, but he vowed that if jisung ever wanted to bake again he would be buying oven mitts.
as the cake cooled on the countertop, they got the mixer out again. they poured heavy cream into the bowl followed by a stick of softened butter and a lot of powdered sugar. they mixed it, speeding it up when the sugar had been fully incorporated.
changbin still had to shoot towards the mixer to slow it down before jisung added cocoa powder, apparently forgetting their previous dilemma.
when he thought the buttercream was done, jisung put a little on a spoon and held it in front of changbin, who ate it and said that it needed more cocoa and to be mixed longer because it was still a bit grainy.
when the frosting was finally done and the cakes were out of the pans (after some struggle), the two men frosted them. several areas ripped, but they just added more frosting to cover it up.
after hours and hours of work and cleaning, jisung and changbin had made a cake. it certainly wasn't very pretty, but it sure was edible. they enjoyed their pieces on the couch, occasionally feeding each other bites or getting frosting on each others faces just to wipe it off for the other.
'disgustingly domestic' as their friends would say. but still, it had been a fun day. and, the following valentine's day, jisung opened one of his gifts to find a pair of oven mitts embroidered with a small slice of cake.
