warnings: none'a walk to clear his head' he'd said. his walks only clouded his mind more and more as every thought was finally able to come up and swirl around his already occupied mind.
chan couldn't help it; it wasn't his fault his phone had reminded him.
but it was his fault for forgetting to delete the photo.
it wasn't chan's fault that his mind reacted to harshly.
was it his fault for falling in love?
————————————
"i promise i'm fine. i'll call you when i get home, okay?"
he hung up the phone, which had rung not ten minutes after he'd gotten off the plane.
after five years, he was finally back. he'd been living in korea and growing his career as a dancer and performer. for five years he wondered if leaving was worth it. but after five years he was finally back.
he arrived at his family home, hugging each of his family members and smiling at the familiar view. it had been too long.
but every view, every face, every smell reminded him. no matter how hard he tried to forget.
"i'm gonna head out for a walk, mom."
"you've been here five minutes!"
"i know, but i want to see everything. i've missed australia."
"okay, be back for dinner felix!"
the streets he walked were stale with old familiarity. each building felt far away as he passed as if just out of reach. felix remembered the times he would pass his friends on these streets. but in the late evening there were few people out and those he didn't see he was unable to recognize.
nostalgia pulled at his heartstrings and lead him from his old school to his favorite coffee shop to the restaurant his childhood friends family owned. he had never really wanted to leave australia. but his parents didn't give him a choice.
felix was to leave for five years. what he did in the meantime was his choice, but he could t make a decision until he came back. that was what he had to do.
leaving hurt more than anything else. it hurt more than the strained phone calls home or the painful memories every time he looked at his camera roll. he lived that pain everyday for five years, and it had all come to this.
————————————
it had officially been five years. counting the days had become a habit and the date was always in the back of his mind. a personal year round calendar to remind him of nothing other than felix.
even though he knew today was the the day he didn't know what to feel. what to think.
should he be excited? anxious? terrified? happy? sad? angry?
no, not angry.
chan had made his decision the moment felix left. he would wait. he would wait until he returned. what felix decided after that was something he never allowed himself to dwell on.
but dwell he still did.
maybe that was why he went on the walk. he knew it was the day. felix should be back. chan tried to convince himself he wasn't searching, but as he made his way to the beach he knew he was lying to himself.
for so long the beach and the sea had been theirs. so many picnics, ice cream dates and surfing lessons.
the pier where they had shared their first kiss.
chan found himself squinting his eyes against the sea wind before he knew it. he watched the sky begin to fade into the brightest reds and oranges. he thought of felix's love of the stars and his own love of the sunset.
he didn't know if the tears brimming his eyes were from the sand and salty wind. but that was what he tried to convince himself.
chan looked to the surf shop and to the pier. the beach and the ice cream shop.
he looked back to the pier.
and there, he saw him. his blond hair slowly waving as the sea air whipped it around. chan couldn't do anything. he stood there paralyzed for too long until he began to sprint.
and there, on the pier, he stood a foot away.
"felix?" he could barely be heard above the wind.
and he turned, hands not leaving the metal railing. their eyes met and recognition flooded both of them.
"chan."
and they were in each others arms, embracing almost painfully as tears replaced the recognition. it was desperate and oh so loving after years and years of loneliness. the others touch was all they so desperately needed.
they pulled away, smiling and crying just to pull the other back in, crushing each other like pythons, never fully ready to let go.
chan ran his hands up and down felix's back, his arms, his shoulders, anywhere that he could reach to ensure he was really back. felix only stopped him by grabbing his hands and holding them tight to his heart.
"i've missed you so, so much."
"oh, felix."
they were laughing through the tears, trying to choke out the words they wanted to say only to pull each other in for a kiss so eager and passionate every other part of the world faded away.
they were back in each other arms.
and by god, they were never going to let go again.
