"jisung! jeongins here!"

jisung heard his moms voice echo up the staircase and he shot out of his room, hopping down the stairs. in the doorway was jeongin, taking his shoes off as his mom asked him questions.

"ma, what did i say about interrogating my friends?"

"i haven't seen him in a while. you know i was away on business." she said. "would you like to stay for dinner, dear?" she turned back to jeongin.

"oh, that would be great."

"wonderful! i'll call you down when it's ready in an hour or so."

it was late afternoon as jisung and jeongin walked back to his room. they commonly spent their days like that, together hanging out. jeongin sprawled across the bed once they were inside, stretching and sighing.

"long day?"

"you could say that. mom lost another job, so i'm trying my best to stay away. one less mouth to feed after all."

"again? how's your dad handling it?"

"he's been acting all disappointed and passive aggressive. better than yelling, i guess."

"well, as always, stay as long as you need. but visit at least every other day, i don't want them getting mad at you for 'being too distant' again."

jeongin chuckled dryly. no matter what he did, he was always wrong. if he was in the house, he was lazy and wasting money. if he was gone, he was distant, ungrateful and a delinquent.

jeongins home life was not a pleasant one. a manipulative and emotionally abusive dad and a mom who couldn't hold a job or her sobriety. together they had a mess of a marriage and jeongin, whose plan was to graduate and move out immediately.

jisung had been his best friends for years. they met in middle school, when jeongin truly realized how fucked up his life was. jisung and his family had welcomed the younger, giving him a safe place and loving environment, something he'd never had.

especially as he grew older, jeongins parents only grew worse, to the point where he was spending upwards of 4 night a week at jisung's. he practically lived there, which no one had a problem with. jisung's parents loved him dearly and were very close with him.

"86 days." jeongin said.

"what?"

"till we graduate. 86 days."

"damn, you're counting?"

"of course. 86 days till high schools done. 86 days till i pack my bags. 86 days till i'm in my own place."

"i can visit, right?"

"absolutely not. i would never let you, my worst enemy, into my personal chambers."

stifling his laughter, jisung went along with the bit, "ah but my sworn enemy, we are spiritually tied together, forever joined. what is yours is mine."

the two burst out laughing, out of breath in seconds. they barely registered jisung's mom calling them for dinner over the cacophony of laughter.

they raced down the stairs, shoving each other out of the way to get to the kitchen first. jisungs mom was setting the dishes down at the table as they took their seats, jisung across from his dad and jeongin next to him.

"hey there jeongin, how have you been?"

"not bad. my math teacher has been giving out a lot of homework though, i can barely keep up."
