genre: fluff/surf au

warnings: i know absolutely nothing about surfing so my apologies if none of this makes sense

as he climbed up the lifeguard tower to start his shift, hyunjin held his hand up against the glare of the sun. he donned his sunglasses and hoped that he'd put on enough sunscreen.

he had started lifeguarding last year, but started at this particular beach just a month ago. it was pretty crowded most of the time due to the lack of natural shade that made it perfect for tanning as well as the waves.

every year hundreds of surfers would come to the beach. hyunjin, while he didn't know how to surf, enjoyed watching them immensely. he liked swimming and had taken a lifeguarding class, so he figured that it would make for a good job.

still, a job isn't very fun if there aren't people around who you enjoy. which is why he was lucky that a boy who worked at one of the shops on the beach had gone up to him for help during his first week because if he hadn't, hyunjin didn't know who else he would be friends with.

jeongin worked at a small shop on the beach that sold food, drinks, sunscreen, goggles and other beach necessities that people are likely to forget. his shop was right next to hyunjin's usual post, which only made it easier for the two to become closer.

it was the middle of july, meaning that the beach was constantly crammed. more people meant more work which meant more hours. but the more hours they worked, the longer the two had to get to know each other.

long enough for both of them to catch major feelings.

in hopes of hiding his feelings, jeongin took to using really shitty pickup lines on hyunjin. often times, they related to the ocean, too. hyunjin found it incredibly cute and had to admit that, although they were cheesy as all hell, the pickup lines sometimes flustered him. today was one those times.

"aren't you tired?"

"what?"

"aren't you tired?" jeongin repeated.

"no, why?"

"because you've been swimming through my mind all day."

hyunjin put his head in his hand and laughed, hoping to hide his reddening face.

"jesus christ, jeongin. this is what i get after a long days work?"

"cmon, you know you love me."

"yeah." hyunjin replied, rolling his eyes.

even if it was sarcastic, jeongin was still shocked to hear hyunjin agree. he shook his head and went back to taking stock.

"i'm gonna go for a swim before i clock out."

"alright hyung. be safe."

hyunjin nodded and waved, already running towards the water.

there were still a few people on the beach, but at this point he just wanted to wash off the days sweat. he dove in and swam out a few meters, coming up for air and sighing contentedly at the refreshing coolness of the water.

what hyunjin didn't know was that a few meters away, he had a secret admirer. the boy was hanging off of his surfboard, staring at the lifeguard. taking advantage of the slight wind, he swam towards the next upcoming wave before kneeling and eventually standing, surfing right towards hyunjin.

once he decided he was close enough, the boy yelled out to hyunjin,

"look out!"

hyunjin turned to see the boy jump off his board to avoid hitting him. he looked around for where he would resurface and began to worry when he didn't see him.
