138. it'll take a lot to lose me

Elia hates when her parents fight, it was never bad, but she hated going for a midnight snack and seeing one of them asleep on the sofa.

Just this time Sirius has been on the sofa every night for a week straight.

Sirius' eyes flutter open when he hears Elia open the fridge. "Hey pumpkin, what's got you up?"

Elia shrugs, "Want a cookie?"

Sirius shakes his head with a small smile, walking over to the kitchen. "Why are you and dad fighting?"

Sirius stops and sits on the kitchen island, Elia sees the pain in his eyes when she brings the subject up.

"Just money stuff"

Elia scoffs and takes a bite out of her cookie. "Don't lie to me"

Sirius is about to tell her off for the attitude, but doesn't bother, he's already fighting with his favorite person, why with both?

"Our schedules arent lining up, and they haven't for awhile, I can never make it to your games and when I get home Remus is in bed, and when I wake up he's left for work etc."

Sirius takes in a short breath, but Elia waits for him to finish. "Things broke loose when I didn't make it to his birthday party we had two weeks ago, it doesn't sound like a big deal, but it was for him, and I'll respect that"

Sirius doesn't like crying, he promised himself to never cry in front of Elia, and here he was breaking that promise with Elia's arms wrapped around him.

"It wasn't your fau-"

"Don't say that because it was my fault, I should have done everything to change my schedule, but I didn't try hard enough"

Elia shakes her head and pulls away from Sirius when she hears Remus come around the corner. Sirius wipes his tears and jumps down from the island facing away from Remus.

"Elia bed, give me the cookie" Elia scurries off, but waits at the top of the stairs.

"Hey" Sirius says quietly, but by the way Remus was talking, this will end up in another full blown fight.

"Why didn't you lie to her?"

Sirius groans. "Of course I fucking lied, but she saw straight through it, she's not a child anymore. She is the age we got together Remus"

"The day I regret most"

Elia hears Sirius gasp, and she does herself.  "Remus please don't say that" Sirius cries, he didn't stop crying when Remus came in after all.

It was silent, and Elia was scared that at any moment one of them would hear her.

"I'm sorry Siriu-"

"Don't touch me Remus, please" Remus takes a step back from Sirius, touching him wasn't a boundary he was going to cross.

"I can quit my job, if that will fix this?"

Remus shakes his head. "You love your job"

Sirius scoffs. "But I love you too Remus, and if you're making me choose it's of course going to be you"

"No, just change your schedule, work less in the days, we don't need to extra money!" Remus says walking closer to Sirius, therefore making him take a step back.

"That's what I've been trying to do for the last month, but it's not easy."

Remus takes a breath and sighs, putting his elbows on the island and his head in his hands.
"I know you've tried, I know, I'm sorry"

Sirius sucks in a breath. "Sorry won't fix this"

"I know, but I miss you and I want this to be over"

"I miss you too" Sirius says and Remus stands properly up from the island and turns to Sirius.

"Can I hug you?" Remus says, his voice about to break with sadness at any second.

Sirius just nods and opens his arms for Remus to fall into, they hadn't hugged like this for awhile. "I really am sorry Sirius, I know it's not easy to just change a work schedule"

Sirius just nods slowly in the hug, taking in every second of it until Remus pulls away leaning hos forehead on Sirius'.

"I love you so much Sirius, I'm sorry for nearly losing you"

Sirius can't help but smile. "It will take a lot more than that to lose me Remus"

Remus laughs and gives Sirius a kiss. "Do you want to come back to out bed?"

Sirius nods happily and walks to the sofa to find a few things before heading up the stairs to their room, and he swears he saw Elias door close shut.
