Chapter 53. Linopha

Linopha wakes up to Callum and Ezran's voices. They were literally shaking her and Rayla awake.

Callum: It worked!

Ezran: Thank goodness you guys are okay!

Callum and Ezran hugged Linopha and Rayla.

Callum: The archway was a solution. We needed to do a breathing spell, and it worked.

Linopha: Then we can keep going.

They made it to the top of storm spire by nightfall. When they reached the top, a skywing elf, Ibis, was there to greet them.

Callum: We're here.

Linopha: Finally.

Ezran: I can't believe we've made it!

Rayla: We've brought him home. Azymondias, the Dragon Prince! He's here to see his mother.

Ibis: It makes my heart leap to see that he lives.

Ibis sighed.

Ibis: But you're too late.

Ibis led them inside the lair at the top of storm spire.

Ibis: The Dragon Queen has not opened her eyes in ten days. She's not dead. She lives and breathes, but... she is not with us. My name is Ibis, mage of the Skywing elves. When I heard that Queen Zubeia was ill, I thought I could use my magic to help her. Losing her mate and her egg had irreparably broken her heart. Finally, she closed her eyes, and has not opened them since.

Rayla stopped and looked around.

Rayla: This is where it happened. Where my parents ran away. I can't stop thinking about that moment. How it led to all of this. Being here... it hurts.

A little while later, Ezran runs into the lair with an unconscious Soren.

Ezran: Callum! We need your help!

Callum: What's Soren doing here?

Ezran: Stop asking questions! Help him!

Callum: Oh, right. Breathing.

Callum traced a rune into the air.

Callum: Ventus Spiralis!

Soren got up, coughing, and looked around, confused.

Soren: Is this... the afterlife?

Callum: No, it's still just... the life... still. You're alive.

Linopha: What's going on?

Soren: Hold on. Give me... Give me a second to catch my breath.

Soren breathed in and out a few more times and then turned to face them.

Soren: Okay. We're all doomed.

They walked inside and sat down.

Soren: It's my dad.

Callum: Lord Viren? He's here in Xadia?

Soren: He's rallied the armies of four kingdoms, and it's not just that. We went to the... Sun elf place? And my dad... he stole some kind of horrible power. And he used it to transform his armies into... into something else.

Callum: What do you mean?

Soren: They're stronger, angrier, big... claws! He's made an army of darkness and he's leading them here... for the dragon prince. I did use the word "doomed."
