Chapter 59. Linopha

Linopha was in her office, when she heard a knock at the door. She opened the door, and a random guard was there to deliver a message.

Random guard: High Messenger Linopha, the King's council is assembling in the throne room.

Linopha: Got it. I'm on my way.

Linopha ran into Callum, Soren, and Corvus on the way there.

Linopha: Good morning, guys!

They pass by the crow master.

Callum: See you guys at the meeting in a minute!

Linopha, Soren, and Corvus entered the meeting room.

Linopha: We've managed to keep Callum's surprise birthday party a secret from him.

Opeli: Are you sure Prince Callum doesn't know that...

The door opened and Opeli immediately stopped talking as Callum entered the room.

Callum: You ever get that feeling where...

Soren: Where you walk into a room and everyone suddenly shuts up and you're pretty sure they were talking about you?

Callum: Yeah!

Corvus shot Soren a look.

Soren: Nope! You're way off, buddy.

Callum: Well, sorry I'm late everyone.

Opeli: We haven't gotten started yet. We're still waiting on your brother, the King.

Soon, Ezran entered the room carrying Bait.

Opeli: It looks like we can start this council meeting. Our first order of business is welcoming our new council member to his first day. Welcome, Barius the Baker.

Ezran: Barius, have you given any thought to the official titles I suggested?

Barius: Hm, while I did appreciate the authoritative ring of "Baker-in-Chief," in the end, I would be humbled to accept the role as your Minister of Crusts and Jellies.

Ezran presented Barius with his badge.

Opeli: Next topic, the King says that he has some news to share. It says here that it is "big news."

Ezran: I've planned a surprise for everyone. The Dragon Queen is coming to Katolis! And she's bringing Zym!

Opeli: Um, King Ezran, perhaps we should think this through. The Dragon Queen in Katolis, won't people be terrified?

Opeli: They might be, at first. But it will change when they meet her. It will start to change how they people dragons. And that's sort of the point. This is a first step towards building trust and peace between the human kingdoms and Xadia.

Barius: Well, uh, I suppose if the kingdom is having a guest, I ought to welcome her with a dragon-sized jelly tart! The size a dragon would eat!

Ezran: Yes! And for tomorrow's council meeting, let's all come with ideas for making this visit amazing.

Opeli: Meeting adjourned.

Everyone got up and began to walk out.

Soren looked over at Linopha and Corvus.

Soren: Hey, after Callum's gone, should we talk about, uh...

Callum looked over at them.

Soren: Uh, that new dance craze! The one that's sweeping the castle? All the kids are doing it.

Soren started doing the floss.

Callum turned and walked away.

Soren: Whew! I'm a master bluffer.

Linopha was walking back to her office after the council meeting when Soren, Corvus, and Callum caught her off guard.

Callum: Soren told me everything.

Soren: Everything about the secret plot that the Crownguard is working to... thwart!

Linopha immediately realized what was happening. Callum suspected something was going on, so they were going to have to find a way to keep his surprise birthday party secret.

Corvus: Uh, maybe we can go somewhere quiet to talk about this plot against the King.

Callum: Let's go to the High Mage's Office, which is, uh, my office.

Callum led them there, and they closed the doors.

Callum: If Ezran is in danger, you need to tell me what's going on, now.

Soren: Well, I'm not sure where to start. I think, uh... you know who knows most of the details? Corvus!

Corvus: I have a quick question first. I've always wondered, uh...what's under that cover?

Corvus pointed at something tall and thing covered with a blanket.

Callum: It's something Lord Viren left behind. A mirror with ancient runes on it.

Callum removed the cover.

Linopha (thinking): That mirror matches Lepidolite's description of the one she found in a dungeon perfectly. And it was one of Viren's dungeons. Could this be the same mirror?

Callum: I'm convinced there's a deeper secret here, if I can just figure out what it is or what it does.

Corvus: That does sound very interesting.

Callum: My Aunt Amaya has managed to locate a rare book in Xadia, a Tome of Translation, and she's sent it, but I'm still waiting for it.

Corvus: That book also sounds very interesting.

Callum: It is! As soon as it gets here, I'm gonna be able to...

Linopha noticed that realization was sinking into Callum.

Callum: Wait, wait. Are you trying to stall me? You know, I'm very passionate about this stuff, and nobody-

Callum gasped when he saw the light in Ezran's tower suddenly go out.

Callum: The King's Tower went dark! Ezran's in trouble!

Callum got up onto the windowsill and jumped off.

Callum: Manus Pluma Volantus!

Callum grew wings and flew toward Ezran's tower.

Soren: Uh, did he just...

Linopha: They're still setting up the surprise birthday party! We have to hurry!

They hurried through the halls to Ezran's room and burst through the doors, but they didn't make it in time.

Soren: Surpri- Oh. We missed it.
