The next morning, Linopha, Callum, and Rayla were ready to head to the Great Bookery.
Callum had taken a horse, and Rayla had brought a shadowpaw.
Linopha took a giant wolf, and she had brought her bag with her journal, an envelope for a letter, a waterproof bag, and the aquamarine.
Callum: Don't you guys love the morning? It reminds me that the world is full of potential.
Rayla: Could you possibly love the morning more quietly?
Rayla yawned loudly.
Rayla: I think if I do this right, I might be able to ride using one eye, and sleep in late with the other one.
Barius: Wait!
The shadowpaw lurched forward, launching Rayla off. Rayla landed in the mud.
Rayla: Whoa! Okay. I'm awake now.
Barius: I heard you were departing for Xadia this morning, and, uh, I wanted to send you off properly. Hot brown morning potion, of course, and a box of my newest morning baked treats. I couldn't decide whether to call them pastry rings, or hole cakes, circle-sweets, or sugar wheels. But I think I got it... Doughie-o's!
Barius presented a box of sugary ring shaped bread buns. Callum grabbed one and bit into it. Bait ate a bunch. Rayla grabbed a couple as well.
Callum: Oh. Oh, this is so good.
Rayla: You said it!
Callum: Linopha, are you going to take one? Because we might eat them all if you don't.
Linopha: No thanks, I'm good.
Barius: I shall send word to the Storm Spire to update Ezran of your whereabouts.
Callum: You should send him one of these too. So good.
Barius: Is it true you're going all the way to Xadia for a book?
Callum: Not just a book. Today, we begin our epic journey to the Great Bookery of Lux Aurea, the greatest library in all of Xadia.
Barius: So... books.
Callum: Mm-hmm.
After journeying for a few days, they took a night to stop in Xadia after crossing the border.
Linopha was writing in her journal. Callum and Rayla having a conversation.
Callum: Even though we're in a totally different world, the sky still looks the same as it does in Katolis. Look. You can see the Big Spoon.
Rayla: The what?
Callum: Don't you have names for constellations here?
Rayla: Yeah, we do. I guess they're just different.
Callum: So what do you call the Big Spoon?
Rayla: That's Garlaath, the Annihilator.
Callum: Oh. Neat. Ah, those five stars in a row are supposed to be the handle of the big spoon.
Rayla: Those five stars are Garlaath's bandolier of skulls.
Callum: Uh-huh, I see it. Unusual garment choice for Garlaath, not very subtle.
Rayla: Annihilators don't need to be subtle.
Linopha: Who's Garlaath, anyway?
Rayla: Don't know.
Callum: What do you call that star? The brightest star in the sky. We call it the South Star. Humans use it to navigate. You know, to find their way in the endless darkness of the night.
Rayla: We call it Leola's last wish.
Callum: Oh. Who's Leola?
Rayla: I dunno. Friend of Garlaath's maybe?
Linopha: Leola... I feel like I've heard that name before...
Linopha heard rustling in the forest.
Linopha: There's something moving in the forest. We have to go.
They frantically packed their things. Callum and Rayla were about to leave when Linopha realized that they had almost left Bait. Linopha was infuriated.
Linopha: Guys! You almost left Bait!
Linopha grabbed Bait and mounted her wolf. Out of the forest crashed what looked like a twisted version of a banther. The banther jumped at the horse. Callum mounted the shadowpaw with Rayla and the three of them left as fast as they could. When the banther was done with the horse, it chased after them.
Rayla: What is that thing?
Callum: Ful-
They jerked to the side and Callum was unable to cast the spell.
Callum: Can you stop lurching around? I'm trying to cast a spell here.
Rayla: It's lurch or be lunch!
Callum: Well, it's nighttime, so we'd more likely be dinner.
Linopha looked over at her bag, containing the aquamarine.
Linopha (thinking): I could use my aquamarine... but... no... this doesn't feel like the right time to use it...
Rayla: Take the reins.
Rayla jumped up and armed her bow with an arrow. She shot at the banther a bunch of times, but missed every time. Stella handed her a different arrow, one with a red handle and tip.
Callum: Is that one special? What does it do?
Rayla: No idea!
Rayla shot the arrow at the banther and hit it. The banther stopped following them.
Callum: Woohoo! Nice arrow!
