Luke halted in the shadow of a building sheltered by the castle walls, turning to Alex and Reggie.
"Okay, we all remember the plan right?"
"Remembering is easy. Understanding your fucked up logic is the hard part." Alex growled for the fiftieth time that night.
Luke rolled his eyes, clutching Reggie's shoulder. "Do you remember the plan?"
"I'm like ninety-nine percent sure." Luke groaned and Reggie hurried to correct himself. "Meaning that I'm pretty sure I know exactly what's going on. Getting through these gates is going to be the scariest part."
"Sure, you're mildly correct. But if you forget something tell one of us. Don't just improvise like you did that time we tried to steal the fresh bread from the bakery."
"Okay that was one time. And that girl was really hot."
Luke shuddered. For days had he found breadcrumbs in random places.
"All this standing around is pissing me off. Are we going or not?" Alex glanced at the bustling crowd, apprehension swimming in his eyes.
Luke didn't deem the attitude worthy of a verbal response. He flipped up his hood, leading towards the gates.
The cobblestone road jolted his every step. The crisp night air carried an odd combination of flowers and smoke. Hooves clacked and horses snorted all around him, for there had to be at least fifty carriages.
Packs of royals chittered—about fine china and landowning if Luke had to guess—parading through the gates and up the steps of the glowing castle. He'd never dreamed of seeing it so close. The pale walls grew opulent as they rose, swirling decorations carved into the stone, flags of burgundy and gold hanging resolute in the air. It was only the outside, but one of the most awe striking things he'd ever seen.
A split moment had him wondering what it would be like to live there, to serve the crowned family. Steady pay, a warm bed and food.
No music. The itch for freedom was enough to remind Luke why he was there, and he melted into the crowd of royal servants left to work.
"He really is serious about this isn't he?" Came Alex's dreadful words from behind.
"He has been doing more pushups than usual." Reggie replied.
Luke shushed the two as they grew closer to the massive gates. He hunched his shoulders, falling into step beside someone's overly glamorized carriage. Not a second glance was cast their way—there weren't many guards stationed near the entrance—and they made it through the entrance like any other servants would.
