6. Saddening and Cheering.

The Kathmandu trip was done, and the three of you were back in New Delhi. The following days and weeks went smoothly with both you and Ayush becoming closer friends especially after that incident.

Rahul was told of the incident and his rage knew no end towards the perpetrator. But you calmed him down, and he was happy to know that Ayush had protected you.

During the quiet Delhi days, whenever Ayush was busy with his work, you would sneakily draw in your journal and on loose papers very quick but crude looking drawings of him sweeping the dead leaves aside, watering the plants, or tilling the soil in the garden. Although not the best drawings, they made you happy looking at them.

You showed the drawings to Rahul as both of you were chatting in his room in the afternoon.

Rahul, who was seated on his bed looking at the drawings, smiled, but his smile seemed concerned; not the usual wide and cheerful grin that he always sported. Your own grin fell a little, but you waited for him to speak.

"Do you like him?" he asked, lifting his eyes from the journal to look at you, seated on a chair across him, with a searching look.

"I do like him!" you exclaimed, feeling a little unnerved by the fact that he wasn't smirking as he usually did when it came to the topic of Ayush.

"As a friend?"

You paused and stared at Rahul with furrowed brows. Rahul stared back, the searching look still on his face. You looked away.

"More than friends," you admitted.

The hardcover journal was shut; the noise of its loud slam echoing in the silent room. Rahul returned the journal to you and shifted slightly where he sat.

"You should back it up a little," he said gently, "It's not a good idea to have a crush on a soldier,"

"What do you mean?" you blinked in shock and leaned forward slightly.

Rahul inhaled sharply and then exhaled, "I've been encouraging of both of your friendship, but for your good, you need to draw the line there," he paused for a moment, "because if you do end up in a relationship with him, you won't be able to hear from him in weeks when he has to go serve the country, let alone have a conversation with him. A relationship can't blossom like this.

"And what will follow after that? Pain. And what after pain? A breakup," he said, "And I don't want you to get hurt."

You were silenced.

"I'm a Brigadier and it took me many years of toil to earn this rank. Although we're best friends, you may have noticed that even I wasn't able to talk to you a lot." he continued, and you nodded in agreement.

"I remember how much you would miss me," he sighed, a sad little smile tugging his lips, "If being away from me hurt, how much more will being away from Ayush hurt, especially if you're in a committed relationship with him?"

You did admit that he was right. Your shoulders dropped and you sat back, feeling like the whole world crashed upon your head. Rahul saw this and sighed. He moved to the edge of his bed in front of you, and gave you some gentle pats on the head.

"I know it's hard for you to hear this, but in the end, it's just my advice. I can't change how you feel about Ayush and neither do I want to force you to listen to me, but I do want you to give this some serious thought before you go forward," he tilted his head slightly so that he could look at you, "Will you do that for me?"
