It was a dark time for you. Dark isn't an accurate word for your suffering. Soundless seems just about right. Regardless, disability was nothing short of darkness itself.
You were sixteen and deaf. It came because of an infection you had last month. Ever since then, living without sound was a living hell.
Days went by with you being depressed. Alfred, your neighbor would come over almost everyday to see you. He'd "talk" to you by writing on a board with a marker and in reply, you'd vocalize your thoughts, even though you couldn't hear yourself speak.
He also made an effort to learn sign language and teach you about it too. Regardless, you still used your mouth to speak. You dared not stay silent, even if you couldn't hear yourself.
Even though being deaf felt like hell, Alfred's presence made it a little more bearable. If you didn't understand, he'd use the board to explain. He soon made you get used to it, but of course, you'd feel dejected when you couldn't listen to music or watch T.V.
A lot of people jeered and mocked Alfred for hanging out with a deaf girl, but none of that stopped him from being around you. Even though he'd smile a lot at you, you couldn't help but look at him and wonder if he was tired.
One such day, the question became too heavy of a burden to bear. So, you asked him,
"Alfred, am I annoying?"
"What makes you say that?" He asked, in sign language, which you could now fully understand.
"A lot of people make fun of you for because of me. Don't you find it a bother?" you looked away and leaned back on the side of your bed.
"I'd be a liar if I said that it wasn't a bother." He replied and your face turned sad.
"Then why are you still here? You could just go away, right?"
"I could do that, but that's not the sort of person I am. Sure, those bastards who make fun of us are annoying, but somehow, the feeling of proving them wrong doesn't seem to die down."
"Every time they mock us, that feeling burns stronger. I'm not going to let people who don't understand needlessly jeer at you." he added, "Also, if a person I really like is distressed, there's no way I could walk away from them. It would pain me too much."
You buried your face in your knees and sighed, flashing a little smile. His words were always truth; never whitewashed.
"In all honesty, I think that communicating with you without words does feel weird for me but, if it makes you comfortable, I'm willing to do it."
"After all, you are really precious to me." He smiled.
"And because of you, I've learned a new skill of talking to deaf people! Isn't that awesome?!" He grinned widely, making you laugh.
"That really is amazing." You said with a bright smile, making Alfred blush, "It's because of you that I can smile again."
"Thank you for always staying by my side." You added, tears brimming your eyes, "Words can't... describe.. how thankful I am..."
Alfred pulled you in a tight hug and rubbed circles on your back for a moment before he pushed you back. He quickly "speaking" in sign language with a serious face on,
"I have something to tell you."
"What is it?" you asked.
"Another reason why I always stick to your side is because..." He paused and all of a sudden, his face turned a lot redder than before.
"I," He pointed to himself.
"Love," He made a heart with his hands, despite knowing how to show love in sign language.
"You." He then pointed at you and then looked away. You understood nevertheless and smiled.
"I love you too."
