Bruce's POV
"Sir, good morning."
"What is good about it?" I asked James.
Dani has flaked out on breakfast. She's frustrating me. She didn't even call. She texted saying "sorry can't make it. Rain check?" After reading that, I felt my indecision fading. I don't think I want to marry Dani. I woke up this morning with the thought of calling off the engagement.
"The Colonel is here to see you. He asks that you make haste."
The Colonel.
This is the last thing I wanted today.
I got up from my desk and made my way down the hallway to the living room. I love it in Tribeca. Everything is just a stroll away. Before Nick gifted us with houses, my plan was to live here in this apartment with Dani.
"Colonel."
"Bruce." He sounds short fused.
"What brings you by?"
"Did you end it?"
If he waits a few more hours, he won't even have to ask me that. It will be over.
"Not yet." I answered truthfully. "Last time I checked I still have a few more days before your deadline."
"I don't want the deadline to come. Bruce, I don't take any happiness in this. You seem happy, not now but you did with that girl. If your happiness was my only concern I would look the other way. But that's not my only concern. I'm also concerned about your future. Marrying a deceitful girl will only cause you pain. Your relationship started on a lie. There is no truth in it. One lie means there are other lies. You tell a lie-"
"To support a lie. I know Colonel."
"That being said, what are you waiting for? Should I have to rip her out of your arms?"
"No Colonel. You'll be pleased to know I am ending the relationship. It's not because of your ultimatum. I was ready to face off with you for her."
He scoffed. "Why are you ending it then?"
"Irreconcilable differences."
"Life dealt be polar opposites with you kids. While Anna over shares, you withhold. I have to adjust myself every time I'm dealing with either one of you." He got on his feet. "Your mother will be pleased with your decision."
"I'm sure she will. She never likes anyone I date."
"She's overprotective. See you later son." He was about to walk away when Zach, the officer from the police department came in.
He immediately saluted the Colonel. "At ease." Zach has served under my father too.
"Colonel, it's such an honor to see you again." They shook hands. The army calls my father the fairest of them all. At first I thought that it's in reference to his looks, blond hair and blue eyes with a goodlooking face. But it means he treats everyone fairly.
"How are you doing?"
"I work at the police department."
"Should you ever need a change, come to the St Patrick Group." He looked at me. "See you later son."
Zach quickly closed the gap between us. "You need to be honest with me."
"About what?"
"Are you having sex with an underage girl?"
"Who told you that?"
"A woman called Yolanda Wu came to the department. She ran into me and told me that you are having sex with her seventeen year old daughter."
