I would rather be anywhere in the world except here. She's been in Spain for weeks and suddenly she shows up with a demand that we meet up. Izzy is so selfish she expects everyone to do what she wants whenever she wants.
"I'm here! What do you want?"
"No hello?" She opened her arms wide. I accepted the brief hug. "Papi says hello."
Izzy has a great relationship with our dad. I don't. He lives in Spain with an older woman, his wife. Whenever Izzy wants to escape the poverty that is home, she runs off to Spain. I have never been to Spain. I stick close to my mother. But the irony is, mother loves Izzy more.
"Look." She suddenly kicked the bouquet of orange and red roses aside. What a waste.
"At the gravestone?" I asked.
"At the declaration of independence! Come on Dani!"
It's Danica's grave. I come here occasionally to check on her. Sometimes I sit beside it and I read her a book. I miss her so much. Her death was sudden. We got a call from London. The man on the phone informed us that Danica was found dead. My mother has never cried like that for anything. The funeral was equally painful for all of us. Danica used to take care of us. Since her death, life has gotten harder.
"What now Izzy? What's the point of this?"
"Bruce St Patrick put her in there." She spoke with a clenched jaw as I rolled my eyes. I am tired of this subject. "Danica died in his arms. Pictures don't lie!"
She showed me the dreadful pictures of Bruce seated on the road side with my sister in his arms. Does she carry them with her do that she remembers to be angry at Bruce? I hate looking at it but perhaps there is some truth in there somewhere. But in my opinion, he looks devastated in the photos. How can a man that devastated have murdered a woman he supposedly loved? It makes no sense! Our captors did say that Bruce had us abducted to force Danica into marrying him but still, that is one side of the story.
What of his side?
I knew Danica very well. No one forced her into anything. She always found a way out even if it was death no pun intended.
"Pictures are worth a thousand words. But if he killed her, why not walk up to him and ask him upfront instead of being sneaky about it? There's much success in asking and not assuming."
"Are you naïve or stupid?"
She's throne who is stupid! But if I tell her that she will drive my head through the tombstone.
"I'm neither. I just don't believe in revenge. It's a maddening exhausting cycle Izzy."
"We owe Dani. We owe her!" She insisted like a deranged person.
"But she's dead! Will she come back to life if we punish Bruce? Say we were to get payback for Danica; hypothetically speaking. How do we go about it?"
"We find a way into Bruce's life. We befriend him and lure him into falling in love."
"When you say we-"
"I mean me and you! Keep up!"
"You mean you and I."
"No one cares!" She smacked my forehead.
"Izzy!"
"Once we own him, we bring him down to his knees. We destroy him."
"And who is going to seduce him into love?"
"Me of course." She puckered her breasts. "We have to be honest Dani, I am hotter than you."
She is hotter than me. She's prettier and stylish. She's confident. She's funny. I'm neither of those things.
"Your plan sounds like a telenovela that will end tragically. I don't like this plan."
"It will work if you follow my steps. Trust me. I know men."
I don't trust Izzy. I wouldn't even if my life depends on it. She is crafty and a total backstabber. What if Bruce is not like most men who are easily seduced by a set of great tits and a pretty face? How are we to get his attention then?
"Okay."
"For Dani."
"For Dani." I repeated her words out of routine. She gave me a quick hug. "Bye!"
Just like that she's gone. I shook my head as I came down to my knees to pick the rose stems. I gathered them together, even if he broken ones and reset them on Danica's grave. My mother wouldn't waste a cent buying flowers. These flowers must be from Bruce. Yesterday was the anniversary of her death.
"Bruce, I really hope you didn't hurt my sister." I sighed softly. "Otherwise we have to hurt you. I know Izzy will even if I back down."
This revenge story is wrong.
It will end badly for someone.
