Daniella's POV
A lot of things happened after that night at the cabin.
For starters, Bruce kept his word. He has stayed away from me and it has been the most painful thirty weeks of my life. All I have had to hold onto is the love we made that night. When I woke up the next morning, he was gone. It was James who took me home. He was serious about the break up. Love is so ugly! I wept, I acted out by fighting with my mother and Izzy and eventually became numb to his absence. Even Anna doesn't talk about him. It's like he told her not to so that this experience is more excruciating. I thought I would at least see him when he pick s and drops Anna from school but he no longer does that.
There are around eighteen months left until this wretched separation ends. Eighteen months. What is he doing? Just being celibate? If he gets together with another woman I will never forgive him. Anna says Bruce is not promiscuous but a man is a man. Left to their own ways they sleep around eventually. My mother calls them dogs. She says even a trained dog is still a dog. These are not things I should be worrying about at my age but I have never acted my age. He got me addicted to something sweet and now it tears me apart that I can't have it and worse still if he's giving it to someone else.
It feels like we had a funeral and buried our relationship and I couldn't find closure. My grades have suffered. The perfect A student is getting B's and C's and she doesn't care. My mind isn't as focused as it used to be.
"Here." Anna sat beside me on the steps in front of the exam halls. "It always makes me feel better."
I stared at the chocolate chip ice cream. It is my worst flavour but trust Anna to think everyone is like her. The big blue eyes got me to feel alive just enough to search for any reminder of Bruce in her but nothing. She is a blonde and he is a brunette. She has blue eyes and he has green. They look nothing alike. Sighing in disappointment I stared into the ice cream.
"Thanks."
"It won't turn into a magic mirror and show you Bruce."
"How is he?" I asked. "Anna please tell me something. Tell me how he is. Tell me where he is. Tell me he's as miserable as I am!"
"He's Bruce Dani. He's void. I can't tell what he's feeling. I guess men just deal differently with these things."
"I'm not void. It hurts and I wear it on my face and it's killing me inside!" I spoke folding a fist and gritting my teeth. "Six months and six days. It hasn't gotten better Anna!"
"I'm sorry." She took my hand. "Time will heal you. It's just one more year and roughly six months. Am I right?"
"It's forever!" I felt like crying but I'm out of tears.
"I know. Think of it this way. If Bruce got recalled to duty in the army until the two years are up, what would you do?"
"I see what you're trying to do Anna but it's not the same thing."
"It is."
"How?"
"He is back to the army. I heard the Colonel saying he is at an outpost in the Middle East." My jaw dropped. He fled from our pain? He had to go all the way to the Middle East just to avoid me? What the hell! "He still loves you. You can't see him or hold him. The time is fixed. He'll come back to you. At least you don't have to worry he won't."
"Unless he dies over there!"
"He won't. You know what the Colonel and my mother call him? Bulletproof. He will be back."
A lot can happen in these eighteen months. Either one of us can meet someone else and fall in love. I won't speak for myself but what about Bruce? Won't he get tired of waiting for me to come of age?
