*Maggie's POV*
"Maggie.....I can't do it," Glenn cried from outside the door. "I can't lose someone else, especially Harper or Emmie. I don't think I would be able to live through that."
I lightly shifted Mia onto my right hip and she made one of her adorable gurgling sounds. "Glenn, please don't say that." I felt the slight sting of tears forming in my tired eyes. "Mia needs her daddy just like Emmie does, and you promised Harper that you would always protect her."
"But that's exactly it! I couldn't protect her....I didn't protect her," he said and I could tell that he was crying hard. "I promised Maggie, I promised her."
I leaned my head on the door. "It's not your fault. We don't even know where this sickness came from."
"Dada!" Mia gurgled and put her hand on the door.
"Hey, Mia," Glenn said weakly. "I'm sorry I'm not in there with you, but I need to be out here to help your sisters." There was a small silence before he spoke again. "I love both of you."
"I love you too," I replied with a weak smile.
Then there was a sudden high pitched scream that sounded like Harper. "Glenn?" I asked. "Glenn, what's going on?!" No answer.
*Glenn's POV*
I ran out into the living room where Harper was screaming with tears running down her face. Then, I dropped down next to her.
"D-daddy!" She choked out while struggling to reach out to me. Tara and Rosita were holding her down as Carol tilted her head back.
Harper's breaths became quick and short and her stomach jerked up every time she breathed. Her face started to go pale and Carol started yelling out. "Glenn back up! I need to open her airway, she can't breathe!"
No, no, no! She was gonna end up like Landon. I couldn't even tell what was happening anymore. The tears blurred my vision and all I heard was yelling. "Please don't die," I cried to myself.
Carol backed away and I rushed over, putting Harper's head in my lap.
"Harper?" I asked, brushing hair out of her face. "Harper?!" I started to shake her. "HARPER! HARPER, WAKE UP! Please wake up," I sobbed, whispering the last part as I pressed my forehead onto hers.
"Glenn," Carol said.
"NO PLEASE JUST STOP!" I sobbed.
"Glenn!" She said once again.
"WHAT?!"
"Look, she's breathing," she said and I looked at Harper's stomach that was slowly rising up and down. "The worst part is over now."
"Harper baby, wake up," I said and her eyes slowly opened.
"Daddy, my throat hurts," she croaked making me smile that my little girl was alive.
I gently picked her up and held her onto my chest. "I know honey, I'll get you some water." I carried her up to the door where Maggie was.
I could hear her faintly crying. "Maggie?"
"Yeah?" She asked with a sob. "I heard you downstairs. I know that she's.....gone."
"I'm okay, mommy. I'm right here," Harper said weakly from my arms.
"Harper, I'm so sorry baby. I wanted to be out there with you but I have to make sure Mia is okay," Maggie said, still crying.
"It's okay, mommy," Harper said. "I'm tired." She let out a small yawn and her eyes started to close.
"Okay, how about you go to bed?" I suggested and she nodded.
"Bye mommy!" She croaked as happily as she could.
"Bye sweetie."
I carried Harper into the bedroom where Emmie was and she curled up on the bed, falling asleep quickly. Then, I moved out to the end of the hallway where there was a window that looked out onto the large field and woods.
I sat down on the windowsill, the moonlight shining through to illuminate the area. "She'll be okay," I whispered to myself. Just like Carol said, the worst of the sickness was over for Harper.
••Flashback••
"Hey there, Harper," I whispered to my newborn daughter that I was holding in my arms. Her eyes were slightly squinted, showing me that her eyes were green, just like Maggie's.
Just like Maggie.
She was a spitting image of Maggie, perfect in every way. "I don't know if you remember, but when you were in your mommy's tummy, I told you every single night that I would always protect you from everything that could hurt you." My voice barely came out as a whisper as I rocked her in my arms. "I'm still gonna keep that promise."
Her small stubby fingers wrapped around mine, making me smile.
That's when I felt arms wrap around my waist, hugging me tight. "Whatcha doing?" Maggie asked. She had just woken up a couple days ago.
"Telling our baby my promise," I said and kissed Harper's head before handing her off to Maggie.
"Hi baby girl," she said in a baby voice. This time, I wrapped my arms around her from behind and Maggie leaned back against my chest, swaying back and forth. My lips found their way to her neck where I left a trail of soft kisses all the way up to her ear where I simply leaned my head against hers.
"You were right," I whispered, not wanting to wake a now sleeping Harper.
"About what?" She asked.
"We did need a baby."
••Flashback over••
A/N
Ew shitty chapter. Sorry for all the flashbacks but Glaggie isn't physically together at the moment in the story, so I wanted to put in some Glaggie moments somehow.
