Chapter 23: Trying To Understand

Amberlee slowly begins to open her eyes, her squinting her eyes lightly because of the bright light in the room. He feels her throat completely dry and her body weak, her head still in pain and lightly pounding but not as much as it was before. She slowly goes to look around, seeing everyone in the room with the exception of Nancy Steve and Stephanie, them being in Amir's room. Amberlee can hear the beeps of the hospital monitor, the TV running in the room. She looks down at herself, seeing her still wear her purple sports bra and her purple joggers with her socks.

"Hey." Max says, going to stroke her cheek a little.

Amberlee goes to look over at Max, seeing Max give her a little smile while her eyes are filled with tears. Amberlee feels her heart beginning to beat more harder and harder. "Amir? Amir?!"

"It's okay sweetheart relax he is just in the next room over." Suzie replies.

Amberlee breaths a sigh of relief, her beginning to look around the room more. "Ryder?" She questions while looking around the room. "Ryder where's Ryder?"

Max looks up at Lucas, him just clenching his jaw while his arms are crossed. Suzie and Dustin go to glance at each other as well as the others, them all looking down a little and not responding to the question.

Amberlee looks over at Lucas. "You...you hit him..." she starts, him looking down at her. "He was trying to HELP ME! HE SAVED ME!" She booms out.

"Amberlee calm down!" Max says in a firm tone.

Amberlee begins to sit up. "Where is he?"

"Amberlee you can't be up right now you're too weak." Max says.

"No I need to see him where is he where's Ryder?!" Amberlee begins to cry, trying to get out from the bed.

"He's in surgery Ambie!" Max reveals, going to lay Amberlee back down. "They don't...they don't know if he'll make it or not."

Amberlee sobs out from the words, her slumping back down on the bed. She just feels all of her tears escape, her shaking while she cries, her shoulders going up and down and her breaths becoming more uneven the more she begins to cry. "No! No no no he saved me! He saved me!" She chokes in between cries.

"Baby you have to calm down. You're getting too winded." Max says in a low voice.

Amberlee let's out a huge gasp while her back arches, her sobs becoming uncontrolled while she shakes her head, feeling her heart grow more tighter and tighter, like her chest is a box growing more smaller and smaller and gripping her heart hard. "I can't! He...he...he saved me! He saved me!"

"Angel you have to calm down." Lucas lightly cries, him taking her hand.

Amberlee shakes her head, her slowly bringing her body to turn away from Lucas. He feels his heart break from the motion, him feeling tears escape his eyes more. She coughs out while she still cries, her hugging herself hard while she cries. She can't believe it, she can't believe how Ryder didn't save her not just once but twice then from there Lucas could hit him. He didn't even try and see what happened, he just automatically assumed.

Now Ryder is in surgery and there is a chance that he might not make it and that makes Amberlee sob out even harder, her barely being able to breathe right now with her uncontrolled sobs and the lord her throat begins to become more dry.

"LeeLee." Annalise cries, Eleven holding her while Annalise looks at Amberlee in concern.

"Ambie sweetie." Max says as she crouches down in front of her. "We need to know what happened okay?"

"Mom he...he saved...he saved..." she tries, her inhaling in hard breaths and gasping out hard.

"No not now baby you need to calm down, control your breaths." Max tells her.
