Taylor looked into the microscope, examining the cells presented underneath it precisely. It's been a couple of months now since she started working at S.H.I.E.L.D., but she already began crawling her way to the top, even though it appeared even more tiring than she predicted.
The top priority for her was her work, becoming the sole person who led the whole lab team. It was a dream for sure, but not something unachievable, not with the skills she had anyway. She worked hard throughout her whole life to be noticed and to be significant, spending her brother's best parties scouring for suitable people to make connections with while he got so drunk, he forgot what his name was.
"Miss Stark," A serious, commanding voice shook her out of her thoughts. Her hands remained steady on the microscope, however – thank God – as it would have been a disaster to clean the inspected blood up from the white desks. She didn't really understand how they could furnish everything with the color that could be stained the easiest. She looked up cautiously to see Fury standing at the door, making her frown. "May I have a word with you please?"
Co-workers watched as she raised from her chair, taking her gloves off in one smooth motion and dropping it on her chair. She couldn't quite leave the blood on the examiner for long, but Fury wanted to talk to her, meaning that it would have to sit there for a while. Which obviously wasn't ideal. Her eyes connected with Dia's, who shot her an encouraging smile and Taylor quickly motioned to the blood and the notepad beside it in hopes of Dia finishing her notes.
Taylor walked through the long hallways of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s building behind Fury until they reached his glum office, where he opened his door and let her walk inside first. She reluctantly sat down in the chair before his desk, crossing her legs and straightening her back. Professionalism was crucial, that was the first thing she had to learn in this world, even if her brother didn't seem to be on the same page as her.
Fury walked around his massive wooden desk and pulled his chair out but froze before he could sit down. He stared at Taylor for a second as if checking if she was fit for work there as if she seemed too weak to do so. She didn't like it when people gave her that look, but she was also used to them judging her and underestimating her abilities. She didn't quite know whether it was because she was a woman, or because she was the little sister of Tony Stark.
Slowly, hoping it would go unnoticed, she tugged on the sleeve of her lab coat, something she did a lot when she was nervous. It eased her nerves just enough to meet Fury's cold eyes somewhat confidently. Even if she appeared to be badass from the outside, some people managed to intimidate her to the point of making her stutter. Although Fury wasn't that high up on her most intimidating people list.
"I know what terms we agreed on when you came to work here. I know that you are only here for lab work, but if you don't mind...I'd have a mission for you," Fury spoke evenly, finally taking a seat. She just furrowed her eyebrows in confusion, her mind buzzing with various questions.
"What kind of mission are we talking about here? I'm not a trained agent or assassin. My fighting abilities are limited and just as you said, my place is in the lab not out in the field," She replied curtly, thinking back to her project.
He let her words sink in for a few seconds before sighing. "You don't have to worry. It doesn't require anything that you don't have."
"I think you should get to the point, sir." Her words were cold, just like the look she regarded him with. She learned once that she needed to be intimidating in a man's presence so he couldn't find a way to put her down, to look down on her.
"Your apartment, or penthouse, or wherever you live. It has a plus room, right?" He looked up, gripping the armrests on his chair.
Taylor almost laughed out loud at how off guard this question caught her, but she hid it by clearing her throat. "Yes," She replied.
