I run as hard as I can. I know that my litter brother is right behind me and I also know that he really wants to know who we're running from. But of course why would I tell him. As far as I know, Squeaks will surely be killed. No doubt about that.
I howl for my pack, but they don't respond. I shake my head in doubt.
'Damn. They can't hear me!' I think in my head.
I get closer to the hunting wolves that were sent out earlier. I hear their padding of their feet, I hear their nasty comments about my pack, and worst of all, I hear what they will do if my pack resists. Of course my pack will resist.
I howl again. This time I get a reply from Shurno. He says that they stopped and are taking a break. I howl more fiercely and tell him to move quickly. The hunting wolves are tracking you.
I don't hear a reply back so I hope that they got up and are running. I am starting to gain speed as the trees become more thin and less of them are around me. The dry, hard dirt seems to turn into nice, green, soft grass. It feels extremely good when I leap over a log and land graciously. It feels amazing.
I can see 2 of 4 wolves tails in the distance. They seem to be slowing down the pace so hopefully I can get past them. They dodge little splinters from the trees and clumsily run through the bushes in their way. I guess there are just super concentrated and really, really... Dumb.
~Later~
It has been about 20 mins since I last heard from my pack. The dumb (and literally I mean dumb) wolves have supposedly given up the hunt, which thankfully gave me time to howl to Shurno and tell him the news.
"Bombs away!!" Says Kayla when I get in the range of jumping.
*SPLAT!*
"Hey! Come on get off of me!" I say in a playful and force growl. Just as I start to push her off my back and stand up, Halo decides to join in. He jumps high and lands very hard. Bringing me to the ground instantly. Although he is very skinny and light in weight, against 2 medium sized wolves, its kind of challenging to stand.
"Nice to see you too now come on. Heave off." I say again, but this time they actually get up. They look at me as I stand and shake off the dirt. On the ground below me there are markings in the dirt from where I laid.
"Okay now we are running from 2 wolves." I say, looking up at them as I am still shaking off dirt from my golden coat. "My litter brother who is literally right behind us and now Nyon. We need to get out of here. Now!" I say raising my voice in an alarming way. They nod quickly and scurry behind me as I trot.
"Alright. We better find more members and find some shelter too." Suggests Shurno. I am still pretty pissed at him, but I'm not denying that he is right. I will tell him later.
"Yes. Well, Miyla What's the plan?" Asks Tala who brings herself to the front of the triangle we made. Shurno in the very back, Halo on the right, Kayla on the left, usually Tala is in the middle of them, and I am in the front.
"I want to meet up with a friend of mine from the Eastern pack." I say not making eye contact with Tala. She knows of whom I speak and I pray that she doesn't mention so I don't have to explain to Kayla and Halo.
"Ohhhhh!!!" She exclaims. "We're going to see Blaez aren't we. We haven't seen him in years." She can go on and on about our times with Blaez. He was our hunting partner and Running Racer champion.
"Yes well I recently got in touch with him and told him we are coming so he should be ready." I reply. I look over at Tala and she looks very surprised that I did something that Alpha-like when I always complain how hard it is.
"You-wow-I mean-like-wow!" She stutters in amazement. Her eyes widen and she nods slowly in improvement. Her eyebrows raise and her bright hazel eyes look deep into the woods for anything.
"Are we good?" I ask the pack as Tala moves back into her formation. I look back to see if they nod. Shurno gives a slight nod the looks away, Halo and Kayla give an excited grin, and Tala gives me an encouraging blink.
"Okay it's about 60 miles away so it might take us a few days." I say. I start to run and the pack follows me in a heartbeat. Their pants and pitter-patter follow right after mine.
"Good job guys." I say as we take shelter from a storm coming through. "We traveled a little over 25 miles I'm guessing." I look up at the dark clouds rumbling and tumbling in the near distance. "This small cave should give us enough room. You think?" I ask as I look at the cave's roof then at them for agreement of disagreement.
Kayla give a tired nod and snuggles up next to Halo who I'm pretty sure is already sleeping in the back corner. Shurno is standing in the mouth of the cave watching as the rain trickles over the top and down the dry plain that surrounds us. Droplets plummet from indescribable distances and crash like bombs on the grass or water.
'Alright Miyla. This is your perfect chance to talk to Shurno.' I think in my head as I walk slowly closer to him.
We are both looking at the rain crash and splash against the flowers. I am on the right side and he is on the left. He turns his head closer to me and angles it in a confused way, only, I know he isn't confused.
"Shurno-" I start to get shy.
'Why am I being so scared?!' I scream in my head.
"I've-well, we've all been wondering what Nyon said back there." His head turns the other way and he starts to walk towards the back of the cave.
"No Shurno please don't do this again!" I yowl in a sadness. "I've been shut out too many times, please. Just tell me what he told you." I plead.
"Fine, but first let me see your right leg." He says in a dark and demanding voice.
I slowly turn around so he could see my right leg. He winces at the mark on my shoulder that I got from the cougar attack.
"What? What's the matter?" I ask.
"That mark, where did you get it?" He asks in a low and scared voice. I have never seen him this nervous.
"I got it when I was no more than 58 months old from a cougar. Why?" I reply and angle my head to my side.
"Well it's just that-um.." He's getting even more nervous now. He is avoiding my eyes and pacing slightly back and forth.
"Well come on then!" I say more demanding and impatient.
He leans in and whispers in my ear, "Nyon marked you." He leans back and walks to the back of the cave. He is still nervous about what is to come.
I stay frozen in my tracks. My eyes are widened and my mouth is dropped to the floor, or at least it feels like it. My ears fall flat against my cheeks and all the sudden I feel very light headed.
It all goes dark.
Hello there!! Thanks so much for reading and if you were at all confused what 'marking' means I will tell you. In the wolf world marking is considered a thing that only married wolves would do. Like sex. Only really married couples have it and really get serious. Okay well hopefully that didn't bring you to a very dark place like it did for me. Again thanks so much and please leave comments on your opinions on the chapter. I would really appreciate it.
