Our plan had started off complicated. Reece however is quick to point out that we are overcomplicating things unnecessarily.

"Eve always says to use the kiss method. Keep it simple stupid. K.I.S.S." He chuckles. So we did. What did we want to do? Kill the King. What was the easiest way to do it? Decapitate him or tear out his heart, smashing it to pieces. How were we going to get there? Portal was the easiest option. When were we going to do it? First thing before sunrise while the King was sleeping in his chambers away from his guards. Reece would go for the head, I would go for the heart and hopefully, one of us got the goods before he woke and could call for help. Simple and effective. Come back alive with Eve never knowing we had left.

What had never dawned on us was that they knew we were coming. Or that it was a cell we would arrive in instead of the King's bedroom. Or Magda portaling straight back out to land on the other side of the cell. We survey the hostile faces looking at us on the other side of the bars. While the King moves over to hand Magda a bloody smelly burlap sack.

"As agreed Magda, your reward. You did well." Magda giggles excitedly and pulls a rotting head from the sack making kissy faces and telling the grotesque head how much she missed it. The King turns to us. "Nice try son, but you didn't count on the Dark Fae King's concubine wanting to follow his wishes through. The Dark Fae were pledged to be mine. Magda here has been feeding us information since you all arrived on the wolves' land. When you asked for her help it gave her the perfect moment to restore some power to us. She gave us the ultimate weapon against Eve. Leverage." His finger points to Reece. "As for you, you traitorous little shit," he says looking at me with a scowl. "I have plans for you. Once I've finished reminding you who is in charge, your ass is going back to your tomb in the caves, only this time you will never be found." The blood drains from my face. I would rather die than go through that hell again. Reece's hand squeezes my shoulder and I grasp it.

If you let me save Reece, I'll go to the box, I swear silently to the Fates.

"Magda, I thought you were Eve's friend!" Reece growls. Magda looks up with surprise, from her one-sided conversation with the head.

"Oh I am, but the King wanted us on this side. He was very clear. Eve's lovely, but I must do my King's bidding."

"The King isn't bidding anything, he's fucking dead!" I snarl. Magda covers what is left of the King's ears and glares at me before raising the head up again.

"He's just feeling a bit poorly aren't you snookums."

"She's fucking bonkers. Mad as a hatter." Reece exclaims. I nod, watching her kiss the black decaying lips, leaving a dark slimy residue on her own, and shudder. A prick suddenly hits my neck and I reach up, pulling a small object away and palming it in my hand. A dart. The effect hits fast, the room spinning. I hear Reece topple behind me. Then my own knees hit the ground. My world darkens to shadows, then absolute darkness.

When I wake, I am surprised to find that I am chained in the cell opposite Reece and not buried in the depths of hell to be forgotten as I had feared. I look at Reece strung up like I was and curse. Things are not looking good. Eve will kill me if her golden boy is harmed. I see Reece stir.

"Get your thinking cap on boy, we aren't dead, we can still do something."

"Yet." Reece slurs, still shaking off the drugs.
