It had been a week since you last saw Tony. A week without him and it felt like a fucking year. You felt so empty without him and that just made you overthink some more. You kept replaying that night and what he said. You knew you were a jerk to him and you hated that you were but you had to. For Pepper and him. They were the endgame afterall right?.
So you pushed him away before Tony could. It's what you did to save yourself from the rejection,pain and fear that you weren't good enough. Your flaws made you easily disposable and silly. You knew these things about yourself and so you didn't want him to see it too because then it would fucking tear you apart. So you got out while you still could. No strings attached coz you'd cut those strings yourself before anyone else could.
You knew Tony saw you for everything that you were and he cared for you deeply, you weren't blind to the moments you'd shared but then there was Pepper and her perfection and how she and Tony just made sense. You knew what you and Tony shared/had wasn't nothing,it meant a lot to not just you but him as well. You'd been friends for years and within that time somewhere down the line you'd both maybe had fallen in like yet you couldn't get past the self-doubts,insecurities and overwhelming overthinking that said you weren't right for him...
Your phone rang snapping you away from your thoughts. Checking caller ID you saw it was Rhodey so you accepted it. ʻʻYou,me. We need to talk. Outside now!ʼʼ and then the line went dead. You groaned as you got out of bed,shoving shoes on making your way to the door. You swung it open and was hit with the cold post rain air. ʻʻI ain't coming out there. You come here.ʼʼ you told him so the man stepped into your home closing the door behind him.
Rhodey gestured to your couch ʻʻSitʼʼ a no nonsense look on his stern face. You mock saluted him ʻʻYes,Colonel Sir.ʼʼ but your second bestfriend of five years wasn't amused not even the slightest. ʻʻLook Y/n, I know what happened between you two and I'm not going to see you or Tony like this. He is a mess and so are you.ʼʼ
ʻʻOh stop it you, you flatter me way too much. really the greatest friend ever.ʼʼ
Rhodey deadpans at you and you tuck your legs underneath you and keep quiet. He was scary when he needed to be that's how he succeeded in what he did.
ʻʻSeriously! Tony does this too. He uses humor and sarcasm to mask his feelings. What is wrong with you two?!ʼʼ
You shrug ʻʻA lot of things apparently. I'm a train wreck, Rhodes. And maybe Tony is too. You should know what to expect from us by now. Which is why he fits better with her... she's sensible and he needs that.ʼʼ you croak out, tears starting to show.
