As you and Seungwoo entered the homeless shelter, you were greeted with laughter and chatter. Volunteers buzzed around, putting together tables and chairs and preparing food for the Valentine's Day dinner. You checked in at the front desk and were quickly given aprons and hats before being led into the kitchen.
You joined a group of volunteers and began chopping vegetables and preparing the meal's ingredients. They laughed, joked, and chatted with the other volunteers as they worked, feeling a sense of camaraderie and joy in the shared experience.
Seungwoo went to the dining hall as dinnertime approached to set the tables and plate the food. You took turns serving, ensuring that everyone had their fill of the delectable meal. Seungwoo noticed your gentle demeanor and warm smile as you served the guests, and he was proud of you.
After finishing his meal, a young boy approached your table with a shy smile. With big brown eyes, he looked up at them.
"Hello there," you said cheerfully. "Can you tell me your name?"
The youngster smiled. "Hello, my name is Sangwoo."
Sangwoo began to tell you about his day after you introduced yourselves. He expressed his desire to become a firefighter and displayed his toy firetruck. Seungwoo listened intently, impressed by Sangwoo's enthusiasm and fighting spirit. You reached out and gently ruffled his hair.
"You're going to be a great firefighter one day," I said. "And I'll make sure to give you a big hug when that day comes!"
Sangwoo flashed a smile at you. "Thank you very much, unnie and oppa!"
As the evening went, you helped with cleanup and chatted with the child and some of the other guests. You held each other's hands as you listened to their stories and shared your own. The resilience and strength of the people they met that night moved both of you, and you felt a deep connection with each other as you worked together to help others.
"I'm so glad we did this," you said, leaning into your car seat as you drove home. "It's amazing how much happiness we can bring to others simply by being present for them."
Seungwoo gave a nod. "It's amazing how much we learn about ourselves along the way."
You smiled. "I feel like we grew closer today, too. That's one of the things I love about you."
Seungwoo returned the smile. "Me too, Y/N; I love you."
Your heart swelled with love and gratitude. This was not a typical Valentine's Day celebration, but you knew that volunteering together would be something they would do long after Valentine's Day was over.
