April 5

The glow of a single candle flickered between you and Subin, its tiny flame dancing as he grinned across the small table. The homemade cake you had clumsily decorated sat between you two, a little lopsided but full of love.

“Go on, make a wish,” you said, nudging the plate closer to him with a grin.

Subin pressed his palms together, eyes squeezing shut for a brief second before he leaned forward and blew out the candle. The smoke curled upward like a tiny ribbon, and for a moment, there was just the easy silence of two people who didn’t need to fill every second with words.

You rested your chin on your hand, smiling. “Alright, birthday boy. Spill. What did you wish for?”

Subin chuckled, sitting back in his chair, his hair a little messy from the breeze that snuck through the open window. “If I tell you, it won’t come true,” he teased, crinkling his nose in that way you secretly loved.

“Come on,” you laughed, nudging him again with your foot under the table. “At least give me a hint. Maybe I can help.”

He paused then, tapping a finger against the side of his mug thoughtfully, the playful spark in his eyes softening into something more earnest. “Actually... there is something.”

You leaned in without thinking, drawn to the change in his voice.

“There’s this elderly shelter I used to visit with my family,” he said quietly. “They’re holding a Spring Festival next month, and they need volunteers. Someone to help clean, decorate, just... make it feel special for the residents.”

He looked at you then, a little nervous. “Would you come with me? As my... volunteer partner?”

There was something about the way he asked, hopeful, that tugged at your heart. You weren’t officially dating yet but everyone around you could tell that Subin was courting you in his own slow, thoughtful way. Every smile, every lingering glance, every small excuse to spend time together was building something between you.

You smiled, without hesitation. “Of course. I'd love to.”

Subin’s whole face lit up, his hands wrapping around his mug like he was trying to hide how wide he was smiling. “Really?” he said, almost disbelieving.

“You made a wish,” you said, bumping your knee lightly against his under the table. “I promised I’d try to make it come true.”

He laughed, the sound so soft and warm it made your chest ache in the best way. “You're really something else,” he said, almost like he didn’t mean for you to hear it.

And in that golden little kitchen, with cake crumbs on the counter and the scent of spring rain drifting in through the open window, a quiet promise bloomed, one you didn’t know would change everything.

Present

The soft click of the car doors echoed in the still morning air as you and Subin stepped out into the bright April sunshine.

A cool breeze swept over you immediately, carrying the crisp scent of fresh blooms and earth, sending a little shiver through your body. You instinctively pulled your cardigan tighter around yourself, the knitted fabric brushing warmly against your arms.
