Kian's POV

Kian put on her uniform blouse and checked her boot laces and hair to make sure everything was in place. She had just finished arranging the last of her belongings which was now beside the entrance. In a few hours, she and her platoon would be in the hangar getting ready to board the plane. They would then leave for Afghanistan shortly after that. In all honesty, Kian felt numb and had no idea how she should feel about it.. But the thought of a certain brunette kept some type of emotion viable. One of sadness, mixed with a glimmer of optimism to see her.

That went away when her phone rang and she read the called ID, "Mother?"

"Hello to you too Kian. How you holding up?" Her voice rang out with worry evident in it

"I'm fine." She sighed sitting herself on the bed

"Now don't start giving me that bull crap. Tell me the truth."

She laughed, "It's bullshit mom, and like I said I'm fine. You don't need to worry about me."

"Don't tell me to not worry when you're going into a warzone."

She rolled her eyes in response, "You sound like Madison."

"Speaking of which, any progress since we last talked?" Her mother's tone lightened at the mention of the brunette

After the fight with Madison she called the one person who has always been for her. For the first time in a long time she broke down, and confessed everything. Her mother advised her to give the singer some time. That in the end Madison will come around and show up today.

"We texted back and forth but nothing significant. I didn't get a definite yes from her though."

"Well that's good, texting it better then nothing. I'm sure she'll show, if I know anything about Madison the girl loves you."

Kian felt like her heart skipped a beat hearing those words, but she quickly shook them off.

"How are you mom? I haven't asked you."

"I'm scared and worried, the last thing a mother wants is for her child to be in danger."

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be, I knew what you were signing yourself up for. I've accepted it. From a young age I knew you were meant to help others."

"I love you mom."

For a moment she didn't hear anything on the other line, tears threatened to leave her eyes. The weight of it all really set in, they could both feel it. Her mother had always been there for her. She was always there at every basketball game, at every graduation, she supported Kian when she told her about commissioning despite her personal fears. And when Kian came out she accepted and supported her with open arms. Despite the criticism she experienced from her husband, her mother was the only person who stood by her for years.

"I love you too honey. Now you be safe over there, you call me whenever you can and I'll be here." Her mother's voice wauvered, she could hear sniffle

"I will mom. I gotta go."

"Okay, honey. I love you."

She hung up the phone allowing it to drop onto her lap. Her hands found her face as she rested her elbows against her legs. Tears she held back had fallen, but she wiped them away and stood up hastily. She pushed all of her feelings away and gathered the rest of her things. Afterwards she did one final sweep of everything, making sure that everything was in order and all of her gear was accounted for.
