"You're positive that it's dead?"
"Yes sir." I sip from the water bottle between my clenched hands.
The Drill Sargent glances at the other man beside him, then gives a quick nod. The other man, seeming satisfied, adjusts his lab coat then leaves the room.
"Good. There's just one more thing I need from you, then you can leave."
"Yes, sir?"
He leads me to a small table then slides a paper up to me. It's an NDA.
"It's been requested that knowledge about this...thing doesn't get out to the public. You understand?"
I look back at memory of that large head. That mouth. Those sounds.
"Yes sir. Absolutely."
"Oh, and by the way, you said it killed two of your squad members?"
I gulp, "yes sir."
"My, it's a miracle you and your friend survived."
I sign the agreement, then mumble, "yes."Jeremy looks up at me, then smiles, "Hey, how'd it go?"
I sit on the chair next to his bed, "Alright. Have they spoken to you yet?"
"Yep. Had to sign and NDA."
My throat clenches.
"Um, Jer, what exactly did you say? About the alien thing and about G - Grant and Roger?"
Jeremy looks at me again then replies, "I said they were killed by the alien. And I said that I didn't see how the it died, so I said it must've been you."
I furrow my brow, "Wait, what? You didn't tell them about the humanoids? Or the disk?"
"I figured you wanted to keep that thing as a souvenir." He gave me a dopey grin. "Besides, now you might get seen as sort of a hero or something."
My face brightens, "You think so?"
Jeremy shrugs, "I'd show respect to the person who killed an alien."
"Heh, yeah. Well," I gently pat his healing ankle, "get better man. Thanks for everything."
I see him give me a mini salute as I leave the infirmary. Finally, I'm able to appreciate the stars again. I take a long drag, searching for anymore shooting stars, but there are none.
A part of me doesn't want to, but I look at the woods anyway. Memories come flooding back. Most bad, a few good, then some that were just bizarre.
Like the ones with Bear.
I shiver when I remember the sight of him carrying that bear skull. The same skull he has around his black leathery belt. A skull I gave to him.
Is that why he didn't kill me? No, it couldn't be since he didn't kill me at the campsite. Is it why he saved me from that other humanoid? Maybe It was his way of paying me back?
So, then, why did he choose to heal me? All I did was hand him a bears head, I'm not tactically useful to him in any way. It was so strange.
I crush out my cigarette then stretch my legs a little. Then there's a noise.
The sound of tree branches snapping.
Then clicks.
I duck down as low as possible in the bush, then peak out through the leaves. There's more clicking noises, then heavy footsteps. Footsteps that are coming right toward me.
I cover my mouth.
The footsteps stop. More clicking.
I look up and see something appearing in front of the bush. There's flashes of blue light taking the shape of a body, then a being melts into view. It's one of the humanoids, but it's not Bear.
This one is tall, massive. It has metallic armor and a face helmet that are very similar to Bear's, but the helmet is more angular. His scaly skin is a deep, dark, purplish, almost black color that reminds me of a panther. He also has the same kind of hair as Bear, except his go all the way down to his hip.
I marvel at the new creature's size, until I notice something on his back. A long, sharp pointy spear.
The humanoid looks around, his sharp helmet glinting in the moonlight. He turns his head in the opposite direction, then let's out a trill of clicking.
Then more appear from the darkness.
There's four in total, varying in height but all looking intimidating in their own ways. Due to the dark, the only visible features are the glowing red eyes of their helmets.
The big one clicks some more and points to the shortest of the group. In response, it pulls out a beeping device that looks a lot like a huge GPS. After observing it, the humanoid points in a far off direction. It makes its own clicking noises which makes the big one make a sort of purring noise.
Then, one by one, each of them leap off into the air. Except one. The remaining humanoid looks around, then makes a sound reminiscent of a sigh. I look closer at it, then almost gasp.
He has a bear skull on his belt!
After he dissapears, I get out of the bush and follow them.
