I just close my eyes and wait for the inevitable. That growl is back, low and ready.
"WINDA! OH GOD - !!"
It's no use, Jeremy can't get up to help with his ankle still bandaged. He'll have to sit there and watch me get ripped apart. Then he'll die too.
If only I weren't so fucking useless and weak. If only I wasn't me.
Goodbye world. Goodbye Jeremy. Goodbye -
SHUNK! SHUNK! SQUELCH!
I open my eyes to see the creature reeling back. Sticking out of its freakish head is three metal disks.
The creature gives out a shrill roar, then stumbles a little on its bent, jointy hind legs. A skeletal tail whips around behind it.
Swish, SHUNK!
Something shiny flew through the air and in a second, the tip of the tail was flung clean off. With it came a shower of more green liquid.
"JEREMY! COVER YOURSELF!!"
Jeremy quickly rolls away, dodging the liquid. The creature continues screaming and wailing.
I scramble to get my gun, arm still stinging. Then I hear a high pitched buzzing. I turn, the creature lunges, there's a faint red glow in the air.
BOOM!!
Green viscera and goop fly everywhere. The creature was completely blown in half. Its bottom half lays limp near Jeremy, the top half twitches at my feet.
I kick it away, then begin to vomit uncontrollably. It's not as bad as the smell or my arm, but it's still disgusting and does nothing to help my exhaustion. Once my stomach is empty, my back hits the ground.
I look face up at the trees and sky. Then, in the darkness, I swear I see a pair of glowing, red eyes."Winda...Winda...you alive?"
"Hmmm..? Wha...." I lean up, then hiss in pain.
"Easy, easy. I wrapped it up and it, uh, didn't look infected?" Jeremy scratched the back of his neck.
"Oh God, you...you tended to a wound..by yourself?" I groaned.
Jeremy looked at my arm. I looked with him. It was completely wrapped up in gauze.
"How do you feel?"
My arm felt completely numb. So numb I couldn't even move it. I was way too scared to see what was under the gauze or ask Jeremy what exactly he did.
"Like shit."
Jeremy chuckled, until he saw I wasn't joking. He cleared his throat then said, "I'll help you make a sling for it in a sec. Just rest right now, and I'll -"
"W - wait!" I rasp in pain for a moment, "That..that monster.."
Jeremy pointed to a bush. Behind it, was a pair of long, poiny legs and half a tail.
"It took quite a while to move. That green shit was everywhere till it...melted right through the ground."
I glanced at the spot where it was killed, spotting wide, deep craters in the dirt. Even a small half of the tree was singed away.
"And...the disks?"
"Oh! Yeah, I took the one that got stuck In the tree! Must've been what cut off its tail." With that, Jeremy retrieved the large, silver disk from my backpack and handed it to me. I observe its metallic surface and razor sharp edge.
"So, it's over? That thing's dead. Our mission's complete."
Jeremy's eyes widened for a second, then he looked at the creature's body. He slumped against the trees trunk. "Yeah. Suppose so. So what now?"
I joined him in staring at the night sky. The stars twinkled down at us, almost in a mocking way.
"I don't know."
I did know. I wanted to get the hell out of this forest.
