"Just think of your happiest memories and say the words. Expecto Patronum." Professor Dunuelos said demonstrating one more time for the class who looked excited.
"Now remember everyone will not get it on the first try for some it takes years to get the spell, even the strongest of the witches and wizards can't so don't lose hope. And now you may begin."
The marauders made their own group standing next to each other and started to perform the spells. Thea whose week was not going well groaned at the idea of summoning happy memories into her mind.
Now of course she had done the spell before but it was unexpected. After her patrons had disappeared she tried again and again but nothing happened so she gave up and watched as the rest of the marauders played with their patrons back in their fourth year.
"Don't sulk like that Melody. Give it a try." James said sending her an encouraging smile. She smiled at the boy gratefully standing up straighter and holding her wand tight.
It was Valentine's Day and of course, James had sent her the ugly poem and chocolates. She loved the poem, she even had turned five boys down.
What she hated was James trying to ask Lily out. Cameron had been warning her for days telling her that this was her last chance. If Lily said yes, it would be all gone. Thea had agreed to his words but she couldn't shake the feeling from her.
"You can do this Do, think of your first day at Hogwarts, think about us. It will be okay Do, I am here with you." Cameron said squeezing the girl's hand in reassurance sending her a smile. Thea seemed to lighten up at his words.
Taking a deep breath she thought of the time when she got her Hogwarts letter opening it with James and then screaming in joy as she tackled her brother. She said the words but nothing came out of her wand.
She groaned going through every memory and saying the words each time nothing happened. Her hopes got bigger when she saw small whips of blue coming out of her wand.
Her smile widened as she saw Remus's wolf and Cameron's fox chasing each other the two had managed to cast the patrons.
Later Sirius, James, and Peter followed as their patronus played with each other.
After much encouragement from James and Sirius, she tried again her hand intertwined with James as her mind went to all her memories.
She closed her eyes and thought about the time she had met the Marauders and how happy she had felt to sit on the train with all of them. How James had smiled at her and held her hand excitedly when they reached Hogwarts.
Her mind diverted to the first time she and James had danced during Christmas with the rest of the marauders how close the two were dancing and laughing. Her mind went to her brother and father when they taught her how to ride her broom.
Her mother came into view as she ran with 14-year-old Thea in the rocky river splashing water at each other. Her mind went back to the night of Halloween when she had forced the Marauders to take a group photo.
Thea opened her eyes and said the words she danced with joy as a Manx cat danced around the fox, wolf, stag, dog, and mouse. Thea hugged James tightly as she watched her patronus dancing around with the others.
"Oh my god, I did it!" She exclaimed, James was red in the face as he laughed along with the girl in his arms. He watched how the stag played with the cat.
"Look even our patronus are best friends," James said a glimmer in his eyes. "They are aren't they?" Thea said watching the beautiful scene before her.
However, James didn't reply he was too busy staring at his Lily flower whose patronus was a doe.
James' mouth hung open as he watched Lily's doe meet his stag and how the two started to play together. His eyes met the bright green of Lily's his smile widened as Lily blushed when James winked her way.
"I think Lily is my soulmate we have the same patronus," James said which brought Thea back to reality as she watched their patronus playing together. Her heart seemed to stop for a moment and her breaths got heavier.
Nobody noticed how the Manx cat slowly disappeared once those words got out of James' mouth.
The marauders were so busy congratulating him that they didn't notice the absence of their best friend.
A tear escaped her eyes, and as the stag and the doe played her heart broke more. To her, it felt like a broken plate was broken again. Her heart ached in her chest as she watched James smile and Lily blush.
Thea ran out of the class her wand close to her as she ran to the abandoned bathroom to cry her heart out.
Her body was no more able to keep up with her mind, she dropped to her knees as she entered one of the stalls.
The bile rose in her throat as she quickly emptied her stomach, the tears escaping her eyes and nothing running inside her mind other than.
'I will never be her.'
'Never meant to be.'
And so the brunette sat beside the loo watching the ceiling as she silently cried the moment repeating inside her mind. She gasped loudly as she again emptied her stomach.
She grimaced at the taste and smell but soon began to laugh bitterly as she realized.
