i watch olivia walk into the cafe, wearing a grey sweatshirt and jeans. "hi," olivia smiles as she stops in front of the counter. "hey olive," i smile, "dining in or taking out?" "dining in, just me please," she says. "alright," i say, picking up a menu. "oh, i'm just gonna get a drink," olivia says. "and you're staying here?" i ask. "yes," she laughs, "i'm knitting." "you knit?" "yeah, it was a quarantine hobby, i'm resurrecting it." "okay, grandma," i chuckle, "how long are you staying?" "shut up," she laughs, "until your shift finishes, probably." "alright, a little more than an hour. come on, i'll give you a table."
we walk to the back corner. "just here," i say. "thank you," olivia says. "of course," i smile, and she sits down on the couch side, facing the store. "what drink would you like?" i ask. "just the usual, please," she says. "no problem," i nod, "i'll be back."
i walk to olivia, drink in one hand and a small plate in the order, matcha donut on top. olivia looks up from her knitting yarn, smiling. "i got you this donut too," i say, "they decided to put it on the menu while we were in hawaii." "looks good," olivia says, "what is it?" "matcha donut with white chocolate drizzled on top," i say, "had one this morning, they're really good, i think you'll love it. by the way, you don't have to pay for it, i got it." i place the drink on the table, then the plate. "thank you, y/n," olivia says, tapping the top of my glasses, "but i'm still gonna pay for it." i chuckle, "it's okay, liv. one donut." "okay," she smiles, "thank you." "no problem," i smile, "enjoy, grandma." i turn around, and olivia laughs as i walk away.
i look up, catching olivia's eye. she looks behind me, covering her mouth as she smiles.
i look behind me too, seeing she was looking at the photograph of us. "hey FRIDAY, text olivia 'do you like the photo?'," i whisper. "sent," FRIDAY responds. i watch as olivia picks up her phone, smiling at the message. she looks at me, then back at her phone as she starts to type. a small tab shows up at the top right of my glasses.
'so so cute!! didn't even notice it when i came in omg'
i look at olivia, and she smiles at me. "i know," i mouth, smiling.
after the time hit 1:30, i look at olivia. i nod at her, and she packs her things into her tote bag, walking up to me. she pays for her drink, looking at the photographs. "hey, why did everyone else write stuff under their photo?" olivia asks. "we will too, i just wanted you to write your name."
i pick up a black sharpie, taking off the photograph. olivia and i sit by a near table, and i pull off the cap. "nervous to write on it," i chuckle. "you'll be alright," she says, "your writing's neat." i put my head down a little, writing my name on the bottom frame and the word 'and' after. "alright, your turn," i say. i slide the photograph over to her, handing her the sharpie.
i lean my elbow on the table, resting my head on it as i watch olivia focus on writing her name. "nervous?" i ask. "yes," she responds. she starts to write her name slowly. she pulls away from the frame after, looking at it. i tilt my head, looking at it too. "looks great," i say. "yeah, doesn't look bad," olivia says, looking at me, "can i add a heart?" "go for it," i smile. "okay," olivia says. she adds a small heart after her name, handing me back the frame. "i'll put this back," i say, "wanna meet back at mine?" "yeah, i'll go now," olivia says, "you'll probably get there before me anyways." i laugh, standing up, "probably." "that wasn't an invitation to race home, by the way," olivia says, standing up too. "don't worry, i know," i smile. "okay, good," she says, "see you at home?" even though olivia doesn't live with me, she always calls my house 'home'. it brings me comfort. "see you at home."
i hand the photo frame back up, going home.
as expected, i reach the house first, olivia pulling up beside my car about 3 minutes later. "come on!" i yell as olivia gets out of her car as i wait at the garage door. "i'm rushing!" she laughs, jogging to me.
after we go out to eat, we get ready for bed, and i lay down. "you and your damn knitting," i smile at olivia. "shush," she laughs, keeping her eyes on her yarn as she uses the needles. "what're you making?" i ask. "um... not sure yet," she says. "aren't you meant to know before you start knitting?" i ask. "probably," she shrugs, "want me to make something for you?" "sure," i chuckle, "if you're any good." "i'm a pro grandma," olivia smiles at me, before looking back, "what do you want?" "what can you make?" i ask, moving closer to her. "well, i can make you a beanie," she says, "do you wear beanies?" "no," i lay my head on her lap, "but i'll start wearing one if you make it." "okay," olivia laughs, looking down at me, "you'll have to go with the cream color since i've already starting on it." "that's okay," i say, "got plenty of colors to go with it." "i think you'll look cute with this," olivia smiles. "obviously i will," i joke, "kidding, when will it be done?" "well, i've got nothing going on tomorrow, so probably tomorrow," she says. "okay," i laugh, "i'm also doing nothing tomorrow." "yeah, forgot that you also have saturdays off now," she says, voice now focused onto her knitting. "yeah," i sigh, "i'm gonna sleep now." "okay, i love you, goodnight," olivia says. "i love you too, goodnight," i whisper, "sleep soon, okay?" "i will," olivia responds.
i wake up, feeling myself on top of olivia. i look up, seeing us laying down normally, my body on olivia's chest.
i walk downstairs, opening my cupboard. not looking too full. i decide to go to the shops before olivia wakes up.
a certain flower bouquet catches my eye. it was a vibrant purple bouquet. i smile, walking over and picking it up.
i walk back into the house, placing the groceries on the counter. i walk upstairs with the flowers, seeing olivia still sleeping. i kneel beside the bed, holding the flowers. "olive," i whisper. she doesn't wake up, so i lean over, kissing her cheek multiple times. olivia lets out a tired sigh. "wake up," i say. she opens her eyes slowly, looking at me. she sits up as she sees the flowers. she looks at me, smile widening, "what's this for?" "i just saw these at the supermarket," i smile, looking at them, "thought of you. you know, with the purple." "they're so pretty," she smile-frowns. "here," i say, handing them to her. "thank you, my love," she chuckles, taking them, "i've never got 'just because' flowers before." "well, glad to be your first," i say. "thank you," she says, leaning over and giving a sweet kiss. "happy birthday," i joke. "thanks! merry christmas," she laughs, smelling the flowers.
