Sometimes hurting the ones you love is the only way to protect them

Eric hadn't changed a bit. He smirked at me as Kala came up from behind him and latched herself onto his arms, looking smug. Well, I guess they were an item now or his toy of the week. I didn't care.

Eric was an enigma who was simply beyond me. The leader of a large rogue faction was still as  capricious as ever.He could be ruthless and cruel. I had seen both his flirty and perverse side as well as his cruel side. I guess he was good-looking enough but unhinged people weren't exactly my type.

But I owed him a lot. When my father had kicked me out of the pack, Eric had found me. He trained me, honed my skills and made me stronger. He was useful but I was not exactly fond of him either. Like I said, he was cruel and I was glad to get away from him, even if it meant joining street gangs to fight in the Underground.

"I would say that I am surprised to see you Tress but I am obviously not. Not when my," he patted Kala, "little fox told me of your presence. You are such an unfaithful girl, Tress. You didn't even come to visit me."

I rolled my eyes. Did I mention how this guy really pushed my buttons? "Some of us have better things to do rather than just fooling around like you Eric."

"Are you implying that I do not perform my duties effectively?" he spoke in a care free tone but I knew him long enough to note how ticked off that made him. I cocked my head to one side. He was testing me. But for what?

I stared at him coldly. "Is there something you wanted from me, Eric? I find it hard to believe that you would just come here to have an idle chat with me." My eyes flicked over to Kala who was studying her nails, leering at them. I hated her.

Eric's stance changed and became more threatening. Was he stupid enough to look for a fight? I studied his profile, my wolf ready to fight if needed.

"Kala here mentions the presence of the future Alpha of the Crissford Pack with you. Is that true?"

"It may or may not be," I spoke dispassionately.

"Is he your mate?" Ah, leverage. He wanted to use me.

"I never took you for the nosy gossip type, Eric." I let a streak of ice and anger edge into my voice. No one was allowed to question me or my intents.

"My dear old friend, I have a job for you," he spoke slowly, his eyes narrowed as he gauged my reaction.

I was vaguely interested. "What?"

"I want you to help me overthrow the Crissford Pack and you can do that by assassinating the heir to the Alpha title," his eyes glittered maliciously and his hair blew wildly around his face. He had all the looks of a mad man.

A part of my brain told me that I shouldn't have responded but my wolf took control unexpectedly. Boy did she see red after Eric's stupid plans. Within a second, I had pinned Eric against the tree. Kala hissed and lunged at me. Using one hand, I punched her hard enough that she went flying into another tree and fell to the ground limp.

I was in my Alpha mode now. My eyes were bound to be black but all I could do was glare at Eric and I snarled, "Drop this madness now. Don't cause a mess for me. I don't know what the hell you're planning but a pack war isn't on my agenda. Get the hell out of here before I do something we will both regret."

I bodily threw him away from me and he landed fifty feet away from me. But unlike Kala, he didn't go limp. His bones must have broken but he was strong and he didn't care. He was born weird. Alpha tone didn't affect him in anyway.
