Teressa's POV:
The only people I could trust in the Crissford pack to hear me out were Sarah and Liya. Giving into my law breaking tendencies, i switched on the ignition with wires on one of the Midnight pack battered vehicles.
"Mommy," Nate murmured sleepily.
Adjusting the rear-view mirror, I let out soothing noises, "That's it baby. Go to sleep. Mommy's here."
He was probably hungry.
The crissford pack territory was miles away. Maybe we could stop for restroom and food in between.
From the looks of it, the packs had been on the move for more than a few days. Which meant by now the forces would be advancing on Jason's territory.
I felt a pang in my heart at his name. His look of betrayal and shock would haunt me forever.
----
Just as the sun began to rise, I stopped in the last town before Crissford Pack's territory. The small town was unexpectedly brimming with people, many whom I suspected were wolves. Cautiously moving through the roads, I stopped near a payphone. Getting out without meeting anyone's eyes, I reached the box and dialed the number.
A few ringtones later, I heard Liya's voice.
"Hello?"
My voice struck in my throat, I wondered if she would help me or betray me.
"If you called atleast do the courtesy of replying." I felt her roll her eyes. A wry smile touched my lips briefly.
"Liya, I need your help."
Silence. Utter silence.
"Please Liya don't tell anyone about this. A life depends on this. I will explain everything just trust me." I pleaded to all dieties out there that she would not call anyone else.
"You betrayed us. You expect me to believe you?" Her voice was strained with fury.
"Please Liya. I - I can explain everything. It isn't all what it seems. You know me. I need your help please. Please. I will owe you for life. I promise you will not be harmed in any way and this is no trick to lure you out. I hate the Midnight pack. I am an exile remember." My throat clogged up. At this moment, I really really hoped she would come to my aid.
A sharp breath. Silence for a whole minute, until I thought she had hung up on me.
"Where are you?" she spoke at last.
Relief made the tears spill over. Long gone was my cocky facade.
"Thank you, Rocket. Thank you so much."
After telling her my location, I brought a couple of burgers from a joint and sat in the car with Nate who was up and playing with a pen he had found in the dashboard.
I stroked his hair. He was with me. He was safe.
"Mommy where's grammy?" his blue wide eyes stared at me.
"Grammy has gone on a vacation." Make that permanent vacation to the limbo.
"Is she going to come bwack?"
"Maybe. Here, lets eat something. You are a good boy aren't you." Handing him a burger, I watched him eat and smiled. He had a wolf's appetite alright.
I saw Liya's car in the distance. She was here.
I stayed in the shadows and my nose tried to detect the presence of any other wolf. When I was sure she wasn't being trailed, I got out of the car to meet her.
