(Cassi POV)
She sat there clutching the sheet. Sitting against the stone wall.
It smelled musty and it was filthy in here. The candle lantern outside the room cast everything in a very dim light.
She was numb. For that she was grateful for shock and its odd side effects. She knew she would feel the pain once it wore off. What the hell happened? The last thing she remembered was the party. Sort of. It was all a blur. The last clear thing she remembered was that damn drink of champagne. She was an idiot! She should have known. He was good. Brilliant. Johnathan could be a star with how good his little act was. She heard Rexton groan in the cell across the hall from her. She stood and peered out.
'Rex? Are you okay?'
'I'm hurt but I'm healing. What happened Cassi?'
'I don't know. What do you remember?'
She heard him groan in pain.
'I was on my way to get Vincent. Then...I don't know. Someone shot me up with wolvesbayne.'
'Wolvesbayne?'
'It's a plant that is basically next to toxic to shifters. Make you feel excruciating pain then you hallucinate. After that you knock out. What about you? What do you remember?'
'Jonathan gave me a drink. It was champagne. But it tasted sweet. I felt odd then it's all a blur. Next thing I know I see James is beating the shit out of you.'
They both heard a door slam open downstairs.
'Rexton.' Her voice was full of fear.
'Quiet. I can smell them.'
'Them?'
'Witches.'
Her heart started pounding as the footsteps drew closer. She backed up in her cell. Fear washed over in waves. She didn't know why but she was absolutely petrified at this moment. The footsteps stopped. It was now dead silent. She stared at the window on her door. Suddenly a face appeared, making her jump. She knew that face. Sylvia?
The smile on her face made Cassi tremble. It was pure malevolence. If there was a look of pure evil hers would be it.
'Hello, Cassandra.'
'What are you doing here?'
'I've come to take you home.'
'Home?'
'Yes.' She said something else. Something in a different language and the door flew open. Sylvia strode in. Backing her in a corner.
'Come on. Don't you want to leave?'
'Why? Why are you helping me?'
'No time for questions now Cassandra.'
Anger over rode her fear.
'Tough. Like hell am I trusting the wrong person again. I want answers.'
Sylvia raised her hand out toward Cassandra and with a snap of her fingers Cassandra became paralyzed.
She was now on the dirty stone floor. She couldn't move or speak.
'What did you do to her?' She heard Rexton bellow.
Sylvia smiled and winked at Cassandra before turning.
'Don't worry Rexton. You get to come too.'
Cassi now heard Rexton snarling. Then it sounded close to a dog whining. Now silence again. She saw shadow silhouettes come into the room. All in cloaks. Her heart was beating so fast it echoed on her ears.
'Thank you Johnathan. You've been most helpful.' She heard Sylvia say.
Johnathan now was in the room.
'No problem. Just keep your end up.'
'Certainly.'
An angry grunt came from Cassi's throat, surprising her.
Johnathan turned and smirked at her. He stepped over to her and squatted down.
'I bet your mind is going at warp speed right now.' He brushed hair off her face and stared into her eyes.
'You see, before my brother found you, I had no desire to be king. But when he stayed behind with you in the human world I got a taste for it. I started the riots, the rouge attacks with the help of Sylvia and her coven. That plan was a bust. I could see you were going to back out of our deal anyway the night I saw my brother put this little ring on your finger.' He said this as he took her hand and slipped the ring off.
'So here we are now. Being king is fun. Now you will escape and disappear with your lover, Rexton, in the night. My brother will slowly die and I will rule. In exchange Sylvia gets two new batteries for her coven's power.'
Confusion still muddled her brain. New Battery? Rexton she understood but herself no.
Johnathan patted her hair.
'You'll understand soon enough, sweets.' He stood up again and turned to Sylvia. 'My brother will be back anytime. Get them out of here before he returns.
'With pleasure.' Sylvia sent him a flirty smile.
She felt herself being picked up. Her hands and feet grabbed on both ends.
She wanted to scream for James. But all she could do is let tears fall from her eyes as fear and helplessness coursed through her. She saw Rexton being picked up as she was carried out of her cell into the hallway. Once they were outside the only light was lanterns coming from the castle in the distance and the stars above. She was then tossed into a wooden wagon with Rexton. They both just lay there staring at each other. From the light of the lantern hanging from the front of the wagon, she could see his eyes mirroring what she was feeling. As they got further away she saw heartbreak in him. Wouldn't Vincent feel his mate leaving? Wouldn't James, if they were truly mates? They must have rode for hours. The unsteady carriage jostled both of them the whole way. The sheet that she had awoken in earlier was her only cover. Now it was only halfway on her. Leaving her literally naked paired with her emotional vulnerability.
The sky was starting to turn pink as the sun rose. She tried to keep her eyes open but it was useless. Sleep claimed her. Sheilding her and her mind from the uncertain fate that waited for her.
