(Cassi)
Sitting in the waiting room she flipped through a magazine while James checked her in with the receptionist. She was eager to catch up on current events since she had been absent from the human world. She was in the fae world for four months. But she had been gone from the human world for a little over two years. James had once said, one day equaled a week in the human world. It was enough to make her head spin. In reality she should be twenty three. Technically she was in the human world but she still looked the same as the day she was taken. Still twenty one. It made sense why in James's kingdom everything was still almost in the dark ages since time moves so slow. She felt him sit back down next to her.
'Are you nervous?' He asked.
'A little. But if my premonition is right, at least we know he'll be okay. I'm more nervous about what they may see.'
'What do you mean?'
'The doctors. What do you think they'll see later? Can unborn babies shift in the womb? I asked Ezri while you were in the shower. She didn't know. All she could tell me was that she could see me having a healthy pregnancy.'
'Cassandra Villr.' The nurse called. Startled, she looked at the nurse then at James. He had a sly smirk on his face.
'Villr huh?' She whispered, with an eyebrow cocked, as she stood with her hand still in his.
'I wanted to hear how it sounded and, Love, it sounds amazing to my ears.'
Blushing she turned her face away slightly to hide.
'You're ridiculous.' As she mumbled that she couldn't help but think of the ring James bought for her. She wondered why he didn't offer it back to her.
'If you'll just step up on the scale. I'll take your weight, blood pressure, and temperature before we move on.'
The nurse was perky and kept eyeing James like he was a dessert. Pamela. Was what her name tag read.
Rolling her eyes, she kicked off her flats before stepping on the scale. Her left shoe, she kicked a little too aggressively. It nearly hit the nurse in the ankle. Not that Cassi would have felt too bad about it. James was effectively ignoring the nurse and helped Cassi step on the scale. Feeling smug she waited for the nurse to start. She breathed a sigh of relief when the nurse was finally done.
'Okay. Everything else looks good. Except your temperature seems a little higher than normal. Are you feeling alright?
'Yes. Fit as a fiddle. Just a little tired lately. But I've been busy so that's expected I think.'
'Okay. Have you been taking any prenatal vitamins?'
'Yes. I started a few days ago.'
'Alright.' She wrote something quickly in her clipboard before turning. 'Well, let me show you to the room where you can wait. The doctor will be in soon. He can talk with you a bit more.'
'He?' Cassi heard James snarl under his breath.
Pamela obviously didnt hear him or ignored him. She showed them briefly into a room and instructed Cassi to strip and put on the pink gown.
She started as soon as the nurse left. Feeling James's eyes on her as she stripped. She was about to slip on the gown when James was suddenly behind her. Cupping her breast. His lips to her ear.
'I wonder if we could squeeze a quickie in before the doctor arrives.' His lips trailed hotly from the shell of her ear down the side of her throat to her shoulder.
Her body so wanted it. But practicality won.
'Na-ah.' She managed to groan. 'The doctor will be in shortly and I'll feel awkward if he was examining me right after we…'
Groaning he bucked his hips against her bottom.
'Knowing another male will be so close and between your legs makes my wolf wants to mount you over and over. Before and after ripping out this man's throat.'
'Should you wait outside?'
'No. I'll try to keep him at bay. I want to see our child too.'
'Then you better behave. If you both do, I'll make it worth your while before you leave.'
'How?'
'You'll see.' She promised. Slipping on the gown she sat up on the exam bed. The stirrups looked daunting but yet gave her some naughty ideas for her and James.
The knock came and entered an elderly gentleman.
'Hello. I'm Dr. Waxel. How are you two today?'
'Good.' Cassi answered briefly while gripping James's hand. She could feel he was tense. Territorial or nerves she wasn't sure. Maybe both.
'How have you been feeling Cassandra?'
'Cassi, please. I'm fine. Just tired.'
'Do you know when you least menstrual cycle was?'
She shrugged hopelessly. 'No idea, doc.'
'Alright. Well your temperature is a bit high. Most pregnant women do run slightly higher than normal. But yours is a bit too high for my liking.'
'It's normal.' James' voice was steady but underneath it was menacing. 'With my family the women tend to run at higher temps while pregnant. It's a family straight sort a speak.'
'Why don't we get started and see what we can see, okay?'
'Okay.' Cassi agreed mildly before lying back.
She heard James's teeth grind when the doctor lubed up the probe stick before gently inserting it inside her. Wincing at the uncomfortable sensation she breathed deep while still squeezing his hand.
The screen flicked. She wasn't sure what was looking at at first.
'That's the amniotic sac.' Dr. Waxel pointed at some empty grey and white space. 'This is your baby. I'd say you were at about nine weeks. Give or take.'
Cassi didn't answer. Her eyes were strained on the screen. On the image of the tiny life growing inside her. Looking over at James his expression mirrored hers. Fascination and wonder.
'He looks like a little bean.' James whispered.
'Yeah. Or a little…squishy…burst.' Cassi giggled at the analogy but it's what he looked like.
James laughed with her before kissing her.
'Would you like to hear the heartbeat?'
'Yes, please.' Cassi squeaked.
The small room slowly grew with the loud noise. Da dook. Da dook.
Tears came in her eyes. Looking at James he kissed her again.
The doctor gave them a few minutes before addressing them again.
'Your temperature is still high. So, you should take some acetaminophen as soon as possible and rest.'
'Okay, doc.'
'Okay. You may get dresses now. I'll make copies of the sonogram for you both and you may go home. I'd like you to call if you feel sick in any way or if your fever hasn't gone down. Your next appointment should be scheduled in about five weeks. Is that all right?'
'Yes. Thank you.'
Dr. Waxel left, leaving her to get dressed.
'You'll be back on the full moon. When is the next?'
'Three weeks. So you'll just have an extra visit from me.'
'I'm not complaining.'
She sent him a flirty smile before winking. While pulling on her clothes.
'Careful, love. I'd hate to embarrass you by ravishing you when the doctor pops back in.'
'I'll behave. For now.'
Reaching up to kiss him she had a flash in her head when she touched his shoulders.
A female shifter was slashing at him with his claws. He dodges the last one and backhands her so hard she slams into a wall behind her. Then a door burst open on his right where a terrifying wild looking wolf stands in the doorway with glowing yellow eyes.
Gasping, she opens her eyes to see James gripping her shoulders.
'What happened? What did you see?'
A knock came at the door and then the doctor strode in.
'Here is your copies and just schedule with the nurse up front.' He sent a cheerful smile to them before leaving.
'Female shifter hurting you with her claws. You hit her then another, bigger, more terrifying looking shifter is in the doorway. In wolf form.'
He tensed. 'Probably more rogues. I should go now.'
'Yes, hurry.' She handed him a copy of the sonogram.
'Have my driver take you home. I'll see you soon. Love you.' Kissing her briefly, he left.
