(James POV)
He found her. After the coffee shop he went to the damned council meeting. He couldn't focus. His inner wolf was restless without her. Before he went to the meeting he noticed the logo on her jacket and traced the college. He made a couple calls and set up a meeting with the chief executive to make a donation if he met with him and gave him a tour in one hour. Meeting the oaf that called himself the chief executive, Mr. Corwell, made him doubt just what kind of intelligence one can gain from this school. He grew impatient with the man the way he was slow to move and wanting to talk about every little tedious detail about the damned school. As soon as he stepped in the building James smelled her. He needed to find her now! He followed her scent all the way to the classroom. Just to see that bitch of a professor bullying his mate. Pride swelled in him when she spoke her answer. She was nervous, he could tell. Her heart was pounding but she held her chin high and spoke loud and clear.
Her voice was like an angels. Light and celestial. He saw the look on the professor. The sneer and could feel her malice. Anger and protectiveness erupted in him. His wolf was dangerously close to the surface. When he defended his mate he could see the professor was not one to back from a challenge easily. But like many bullies if you show no weakness they will begin to fear. He held the professor's eyes and felt his canines pushing through. He was beginning to see red at the challenge. It was never a good idea to try and stare an alpha down, know matter who you are. Only the alpha's equal was allowed to do so. In this case that right was reserved for only his mate. When permission was grudgingly granted to listen to the class he couldn't stop staring at her. Her scent was driving his wolf in a frenzy. He was silently begging her to look at him.
To his shock and delight she did. She looked at him over her shoulder below long eyelashes. Her big blue eyes were those of an innocent. But he could see she had lived through hardship and pain. In that one glance he could see her soul. She was strong. He couldn't help but smile at her. Exactly what he needed. When she looked away he felt loss and greedy for more. The absurd bell rang far too loudly for his werewolf hearing. All this students stood and rushed out. He willed her to look at him again. Just once more. She granted him that request. His heart sped as her gaze met his. If someone had told him he'd fall this hard for a woman...a human he'd, have laughed at them. Human were weak, greedy, selfish, and from what he gathered had no loyalties. They were out to get what they could from another. Like a parasite. But this one. This creature was a gift from the moon goddess.
He needed to plan. He needed to research. Find out everything he could about her. He followed Mr. Corwell around the building on the tour. But James didn't pay attention. He was already making preparation. mental not to call his people. Maybe have his brother go back to the pack while he figured out how to convince his lovely mate to come home with him. She belonged with him. To him. She would go back with him one way or another. He just hoped it was willingly. Werewolves or shifters, as the new generations like to call them, were fierce, ruthless, and extremely territorial over their mates. Add Viking ancestry to the mix and you've got double dosage of it all. James's knew now that he had found her he needed her to survive. She was queen of his pack. He needed her to continue the bloodline of alphas. James swore to his father before he was killed in battle that when the time came he'd choose a mate and produce an heir. Two things he never considered though. One, that he'd actually get a fated mate and a human one at that. His ancestors got their fated mates but over the last centuries it was rare.
Now marriages were done by allies, treaties, or who was the most compatible. What pair could make a powerful offspring. Deals. Even crossbreeding was know to happen every now and again. Vampires would take a witch as a partner. A demon and a djinn. A banshee and a siren. But humans were unheard of. They were labeled too weak and easily corrupted. Mostly human were used as pets or tools to do a supernatural bidding in the human world. Another thing he didn't see coming is him finding her so soon. But he still couldn't understand why or how she was human. She had a luminosity about her inside and out from what he could tell. That light could attract even the blind. Maybe it was because she was his mate was the reason he saw her as so special. Or maybe he was a little disappointed she was human and he was reaching. But now that he had found her he'd be damned before he let her slip through his grasp.
'Mr. Villr?'
James stopped. They were standing outside Mr. Corwell office.
'Yes, Mr. Corwell. Thank you for your time. I'll have my assistant send over a check this afternoon for ten thousand dollars for financial aid.'
Before Mr. Corwell could stammer his thanks James ignored his outstretched hand and sidestep him to find the exit. His temporary driver quickly scrambled out of the driver seat and opened the back door for him.
'Where now sir?'
'One moment.'
'Yes sir.' The driver nodded and closed the door and went to sit back in the drivers seat. James put the privacy window up and made a couple calls. His brother picked up after three rings.
'What now, bro. I'm packed and ready.'
James head the familiar moaning sound of a female in the background followed by two women giggling on the other end of the phone.
'Yes, I take it you called maid service to assist you again?'
He heard his brother give a throaty laugh.
'I had time to waste. And this time two is better then one.'
'Well pay attention. I have some things to do. I need you to go home and cover for me. It wont be long.'
Silence was on the other end besides the two women breathless laughter and soft moans.
'Wait a second. You want me to go home and cover you and you're staying here? You hate this place. You have little patience for...er...other humans. So why would you stay? From what I could tell since we got here you'd kill to make time speed up so we could be back home. You hate it here.' Jonathan pointed out suspiciously.
' I found my mate.'
'Repeat that.' He heard his brother get up and move around.
James sighed impatiently.
'My mate. I found her this morning. I'll explain everything tonight. I just wanted to give you fair warning.'
'You found your mate. A human?!' His brother spoke slowly as if there was something he was missing.
'Yes! That's why I need you to go home and prepare the pack for their luna. Their queen.'
'Okay. But you do know some might not like this. You know how the fae world feels about humans.'
'I don't give a damn!' James shouted. 'I am their king and they will show respect for me and my mate!'
'Don't shoot the messenger, bro. I'm just saying. But I'll expect nothing less.' His brother still sounded shocked.
'Just do what I ask. You are my second in command. I need you to hold the pack down until I get back. It should take me two or three days tops.'
'Okay big brother. So when do I get to meet her?'
'When I'm ready.' James hissed through his teeth agitated. 'They're things I have to do first. I'll call you later.' With that he ended the call.
He pushed the button to release the privacy window. The chauffeur was waiting obediently in the driver seat. his back to James and his hands on the steering wheel.
James was about to order him to drive back to the hotel when through the open window driver side window he smelled her. Through his enhanced hearing he could hear her talking on the phone.
'Leon? I got your text message. Next week I can pick up more night shifts.'
James shifted in his seat and through the back window he could see her. She was standing by the bike racks unlocking the chain with her cell phone tucked between her ear and shoulder. Her hair was glowing in the autumn sunlight. She looked stressed.
The man on the other end of the phone sounded gruff.
'We're down two waitresses. I need you now.'
'Yes. I understand but I have finals I need to study for. It's not possible for me. Next week I can take on a couple extra shifts.'
'What good are you to me now then?!' James's teeth snapped and a low growl came from his throat. Who were these humans to think they could speak to his mate like this.
'I'm sorry Leon but I can't.' His mate sounded distressed and sad. But firm.
'You need this job don't you?'
'Yes, I do.'
The mans voice dropped to a husky whisper. 'Then be here tonight by five Cassandra.'
James shattered his phone he was holding in his hand. Now to go on the hunt.
