Cassi's POV)

She had never been so happy to see Amy then when she came into the apartment at that moment. James didn't even blink when she sprayed him in the eyes. In a flash he was gone. Cassi quickly called the police. She asked for detective Parks. When she arrived she told her everything. The detective looked at her with sympathy. Like one would look at a crazy person who was having a full mental break. She and Amy were taken down to the station where they filled out a formal statement.

She then was taken back and sat at the table in an interrogation room. Elise questioned her. It was soon confirmed that Leon hadn't been seen since Cassi left the restaurant. Soon Elise was firing off questions.
'Where did you go after you left the diner?'
'I went to pumphouse park.'
"Were you with anyone who can confirm?'
"No but I spoke to my friend, Alice, on the phone.'
'After that?'
'I went home.'
"How long were you there?'
'Until around five, I think. My roommate came home and we went out soon after, to the club, The Inferno.'
'You said Leon assaulted you?'
"Yes. We struggled a bit. I kicked him in the balls and left. I was defending myself. Check the security footage. We have cameras at the diner.'
Elise leaned forward on the table. 'Cassi. No one is saying you did anything. I just need to know the sequence of events and facts.'
'And I told you the facts. James Villr has been stalking me. He admitted to me he killed Leon, because he heard him threaten me and hurt me. He's crazy.'
'And you said, his face changed? Quote, 'His eyes glowed and his teeth were fangs.'
Cassi ran a frustrated hand through her hair. 'I know how this sounds but it's true.'
'Were you under the influence of alcohol or drugs?'
Cassi huffed in annoyance. 'Yes I had some drinks tonight but I was sober by the time we got back to my place. Look, I'm telling you the truth. You said Leon was gone, right?'
'Yes, but he could show up later. It hasn't been twenty four hours yet.'
'Are you serious?' Cassi asked incredulously. 'I tell you a man has been killed and you're not going to look into it? The same man, Elise, that you've been watching for six weeks now?!'
'Cassi I understand you're frustrated and you seem scared. But you're not making any sense.'
Cassi slumped in her chair. 'Okay. you know what? I'm done. I'm tired. I've had a long night. If your not charging me, then i'm going home.'
Elise stood when Cassi did.
'Okay. Go home and stay there. Get some rest. We'll meet tomorrow. We'll talk more.'
'What about the other girls?'
Elise shrugged. 'Until Leon shows up I don't need to talk with them right now. So go home and rest up. Tomorrow at nine AM. I'll come and get you.'

Amy was waiting for her on a bench in the lobby. They caught a cab home. Amy spent all night consoling her. She didn't even believe what Cassi was saying. Amy was so drunk when she came in she wasn't sure what she saw now that she was starting to sober up. Cassi didn't sleep a wink. What she knew about werewolves from books and bad movies, was they didn't like silver. It just so happened that Amy had an antique silver letter opener in her desk in her room. She remembered borrowing it once to open up packages from amazon. Cassi crept into Amy's room while she lay snoring in her bed. Fished it out of her top drawer and took it to her room. She kept clutching it to her all night.

Her wrists were sore and bruised from Jame's grasp. Everythime she closed her eyes she saw his face. It was something you saw out of a horror movie. His voice was what you'd expect to hear from someone possessed. He killed Leon! Leon deserved to suffer! She couldn't judge if he deserved death or not. But when she thought of her girls at the diner she started to reconsider.
A murderer! She went out on a date with a murderer!
The morning came too quickly. Amy had already left for work. She left a note taped to her door saying she'd call and check in on her later. Not knowing what else to do, she got up and made coffee. Usually by now she would be getting ready for school. But since Elise would be here to pick her up she had to miss at least half her classes.
To keep herself busy in the meantime she did a few loads of laundry. Tidied up her room. Did the dishes. She even went as far as deep cleaning the bathroom. The apartment was cleaner then it had ever been. Amy would be shocked when she came home.
She chose to slum it today with her outfit. Black leggings, and a simple white crop top and a black zip up hoodie. Simple combat boots and her hair in a messy untamed high ponytail to finish it off. She tucked the letter opener in her right boot for protection. She just finished brushing her teeth when a knock came to the door.
Cassi froze. What if it was him? What should she do? She quickly grabbed the letter opener. Looking out the peephole she sighed with relief at seeing Elise. Tucking the letter opener back in her boot she opened the door. She was surprised to see a man with her. He was about six feet tall. Late thirties or forties. African american. In a maroon sweater vest and grey trousers. Black lens spectacles were perched on his nose.
'Good morning, Cassi.' Elise greeted.
'Good morning.' She greeted them both. She sent a questioning look toward Elise then looked at the man beside her.
'Cassi, this is my good friend, Dr. Samuel Kruse. He works from time to time down at the station with us. He's a psychiatrist.'
Cassi had heard enough. 'Oh? Why is a psychiatrist necessary?'
Elise sighed. 'Cassi, may we come in, please? It may be better to discuss this inside?'
After a moment of considering slamming the door in their faces she stepped back and invited them in. She offered and then poured coffee for them and sat in the rocking chair.
'Cassi,' Dr. Kruse started. 'Elise told me what you said last night. I'm here to ask you to let me evaluate you.'
'And just why would I need that? Everything I said last night I saw. My roommate saw him holding my wrists. She sprayed him in the eyes with pepper spray and he didn't even flinch!'
Elise cleared her throat. 'Yes well your roommate was intoxicated. She was well over the legal limit. So her statement isn't exactly reliable.'
'I'm not crazy, Elise.' Cassi gritted her teeth.
'No one thinks you're crazy, Cassi.' Dr. Kruse assured. 'It's just you've been under a lot of stress lately. Young girl like you has a lot on her plate it would seem. Work, school, this case against your boss. Maybe it's becoming a bit overwhelming?'
'I'm fine, damn it!' 'The man last night, James Villr, is a monster. Literally! He told me he killed Leon because in his crazy mind he was protecting me. He said he was a...a shifter. Werewolf. He had claws and his eyes glowed. His teeth grew into fangs. I know how it sounds but it's true.'
Dr. Kruse and Elise looked at each other before slowly looking back at Cassi.
'Cassi.' Elise started slowly. 'With the case against Leon I need it to be on record you are sound of mind. So I think it would be best for Samuel here to evaluate you. It won't take too long and it wont hurt you.'
'What happens by the end of it, you think I'm still nuts?' Cassi snapped.
'If we think anything is wrong we will cross that bridge when we get there. Please just come with us. You'll talk with him and he'll run a few tests. That's all.'
Cassi sighed. Thinking. What did she have to lose? The worst thing that could happen is she wouldn't be able to testify and they lock her up in a padded cell.
'Fine.' She agreed stiffly. She picked up her purse and locked the door behind her. They all three got in Elise's car. Elise and Dr. Kruse sat in front while Cassi sat in back. She was thinking of everything that had happened since last night. Why haven't they mentioned anything about Leon's whereabouts?
'Have you found Leon yet?' She finally asked.
She saw again Dr.Kruse and Elise look at eachother. As if they knew something they weren't telling her.
'No, we haven't.' Elise answered after a long pause.
Cassi began to panic.
'You don't...Do you still think I had something to do with it?'
'No Cassi I don't.'
Elise's answer should have put her at ease. But the way she said it did the opposite. It was like she knew who did. The same way a parent tells a child a shot won't hurt but the child is still frightened and knows it's going to feel that prick. Cassi rested her head in her hands. The night of no sleep was catching up to her. The movement of the car was lulling her. Even though her mind was trying to work something out but was too tired to catch on.
She lifted her head to ask if her alibi checked out at all when she realized they were driving down a back road. A deserted quiet back road.
'Where are we going?'
They looked at eachother again. They didn't answer. Looking around in a panic she saw there was nothing around them Except an empty field.
'What's going on?'
Still no answer. They didn't even glance at her. Fear started to creep in. In instinct she reached for the handle. Planning on tucking and rolling if she had to. But the door didn't open.
'Stop the car!'
'Just relax, Cassi. Everything is going to be alright.' Dr. Kruse said calmly.
'Let me out!' She unbuckled her seat belt and slid to the other door and tried but it didn't give.
'Just stay still and stay calm. We're almost there.' Elise's voice sounded almost bored.
'Where is there?'
Silence.
Cassi hugged her knees trying to think. She had nothing to break the windows. Then an idea struck her. It was risky but she should at least try. She got the letter opener and held it to Elise's throat.
'Pull over.'
Elise froze then without warning she jerked the wheel in the opposite direction. The car swerved knocking Cassi to the side. She quickly maintained her balance and went to stab Elise in the shoulder. Dr. Kruse turned in his seat and she saw in her peripheral vision he quickly got a needle from a case in his pocket. She quickly stabbed him in the arm. He let out a pain gasp while dropping the syringe. The car slammed to a halt. Cassi went forward then back. Suddenly the back door opened.
She let out a scream when she saw who was standing there. She kicked and pushed herself away to the other side of the backseat. She reached for the blade that was on the car floor. James reached in and pulled her out by her ankle. She continued to scream and kick. She slashed him on his arm. The wound sizzled and hissed as if he was burned. A growl ripped from his throat. His eyes glowed again and his teeth were sharpened and bared. He grabbed her hand holding the knife and bent her arm back until she cried out and dropped it. He had her arms pinned behind her back. Her back to his front.
She tried to thrash and wiggle her way out of his hold. She saw Dr. Kruse coming toward her with the needle.
'How could you do this? Why?' She asked Elise who was coming toward her as well.
She sighed. 'I know who and what James is Cassi. We are a human faction. Our ancestors kept watch for centuries. After you told me everything last night, I called James. You'll be fine. He'll take care of you. You'll be safe.'
'People are going to look for me. How are you going to cover that up, Elise?'

Elise had almost a sympathetic look on her face. 'There are people that James knows, who can erase your roommates mind of you. I will erase everything about you in the system. Anything left….you'll just be another young girl who unfortunately went missing in New York City.'
Cassi was shaking in horror and in fear. Tears were running down her face.
'How could you? You're supposed to protect!' Cassi was sobbing uncontrollably.
Elise put a hand on Cassi's shoulder.
'We have to maintain balance, Cassi. James gets you, his mate. We get protection and a favor is owed for the humans.' She continued to explain as she held Cassi's right arm still. 'You are a necessary sacrifice. You will be fine. James will protect you.'
'No! No, please!' Cassi kept struggling until she felt the needle pierce the vein in the crook of her elbow. Their faces became blurry. Voices became hollowed echoes. Blackness consumed her vision. The next thing she felt was being lifted in a set of arms before she knew nothing else.
