Saad's pov:
Sighing, I ran a hand through my hair. I knew I was late. But I had no idea it would take this much time. I hoped they were still awake and she wasn't angry with me. In my defense, I did bring her a surprise, so technically she shouldn't get angry at me, right?
I guess we will only know once we get inside.
Opening the door quietly, I pushed the wheelchair, indicating ammi to keep quiet.
Since they weren't going to discharge her until another few days, I requested them to discharge her sooner to give Atifa a surprise. She missed her so much. And it didn't feel right to let her stay at the hospital for any longer when we knew her condition and how much time she might have left. Although they did ask me to bring her in for the remaining check-ups.
Atifa was done with her exams and Amira only had a few left.
Tiptoeing inside the living room, I found Atifa dozed off on the couch, her legs tucked underneath her with a cushion on her lap. It looked like she dozed off while waiting for me.
I quietly made my way to the dining room, finding its lights turned on. Amira was dozing off there, keeping her head on the table with Atifa's mobile beside her. The table was laid out elegantly. It looked like new cutlery was taken out, especially for that day.
Smiling to myself, I headed back to the door, deciding to bring ammi in first. I couldn't wait to look at their reactions once they would get to see their surprise.
Wheeling the wheelchair in, I adjusted it opposite to the couch where Atifa was sleeping, a glass table in-between them.
"What time is it now?" Looking at her daughter's sleeping figure, ammi frowned.
"It's past 11. Today was her last exam so she slept late last night and woke up early in the morning. She must have been tired." I replied quietly. I didn't want to wake her up, but guessing by the dining table, it seemed like she hadn't had her dinner yet.
"Ah yes yes, I remember now. But where is Amira?"
"She is also sleeping." I motioned towards the dining room as she nodded in understanding.
Making my way towards Atifa quietly, I tapped her shoulders. But she didn't wake up. Oh how could I have forgotten how deep of a sleeper she was?!
Sighing, I resorted to shaking her shoulders. "Atifa?"
"Huh?" Jerking out of her sleep, she swung her cushion in front of her, almost hitting me. Since this wasn't the first time she was doing something like this while waking up from her sleep, I had gotten quite used to it.
"Good morning."
"Huh? It's morning already? When did you come back? And- and why am I still in the living room? You didn't come back last night? Where were you and oh my god! The food! I left it-"
"Calm down! It's not morning yet but since you just woke up from your sleep I can't say good night now, can I?" Raising a brow, I kept the cushion back on her lap before standing straight. I had bent down to her level unintentionally while trying to wake her up.
"Oh." Her shoulders sagged in relief as she nodded her head in understanding before frowning again. "But why are you so late?"
"I… was just trying to prepare a surprise for you?" Moving aside, I gave her a way to look past me sheepishly.
"And what… " Stopping midway, she stood up in surprise. "Ammi? You actually managed to bring her here? But… but how?!"
Without even waiting for my reply, she rushed to hug her, excitement radiating off her face. "Assalamualaikum ammi! How are you feeling now? Are you fine? I missed you so much!"
