Addison and Rebecca were laying in bed when the power cut out.
It was snowing, the wind was howling, and it wasn't concerning that the power went out, but it was eerie, especially because just hours earlier, Addison had been shot at on the back porch of the family home. Rebecca held onto Addison's hand tightly as the wind howled outside, branches from trees scratching against the windows. It felt like a horror movie, where they were sitting ducks waiting to be attacked. Each scratch against the window made goosebumps rise on Addison's skin, but she tried to hide her fear in order to stay calm for Rebecca.
A crash downstairs made it near impossible for her to remain calm, a sharp gasp leaving her lips.
Hayden and Nicolas had their guns in their hands immediately, backs facing the two women sitting in the bed. "We have to get her out of here," Nicolas whispered, turning back to see Addison reaching over for a sweatshirt Bucky had left on the floor, hands shaking as she pulled a knife out of the pocket before pulling it over her head, "she's going to be the primary target if we get her out, we can hide Rebecca and be able to neutralize the threat."
Another loud crash and glass shattering made both Addison and Rebecca slam back against the headboard.
Hayden cursed under his breath, tucking his gun back into its holster before starting to undo the straps on his vest, "cover me," he mumbled to Nicolas, the man stepping in front of Hayden as he looked over his shoulder at Addison, "come here, please."
Addison didn't hesitate, kicking the sheets off her legs and quickly moving to stand between Hayden and Nicolas. "You're going to wear this," Hayden whispered, pulling the vest over his head before pulling it over Addison's body, working on tightening the straps, "if they're downstairs you can get to the grove where the security team is, I'll drop the fire ladder off the side of the balcony, but do not stop to look back, do you understand?"
Addison's hands on Hayden's shoulders shook as she nodded, his fingers tightening the last strap. "I'm scared," she whispered, looking up at her enforcer with tears in her eyes.
"I know," Hayden smoothed down the hair at the back of her head, "don't go with anyone, I'll come to find you after we clear downstairs and get Rebecca hidden," taking Addison's hand, he lead her to the balcony, pulling the curtains back to make sure the backyard was clear, Addison's grip tightening when she heard footsteps coming up the stairs with muffled voices. "Climb into a tree when you get to the grove, stay off the ground, I'll be there soon," Hayden spoke quickly as he guided her out to the balcony, tossing the fire ladder down, making sure it was secure as Addison lifted herself over the railing, gripping the bars tightly.
The balcony doors shut and Addison knew she only had moments before the people in the house realized she wasn't there, when she got to a point where she could jump down without hurting herself she did. Bare feet hitting icy grass, as soon as she felt dew on her toes she took off running towards the grove, the crunching sound being her motivation to keep going. Each crunch of the grass was a reminder that she was almost to where she needed to be. The breath leaving her lungs hurt, the icy air feeling like knives slicing up the organ in her chest, burning as she kept running. She listened to Hayden not stopping to look back, her goal was the grove, and she wasn't going to stop until she got there.
As she broke through the tree line, she heard gunfire erupt from the house, it made her stop for a moment, turning around to raise a shaky hand to her mouth to muffle the cry that she let out.
Climb into a tree, I'll be there soon.
Hayden's voice ran through her head, turning back around she saw a tree that looked easy to climb and had foliage that would cover her completely. More gunfire was going off behind her, so she quickly ran to the tree, gripping parts of the trunk that would allow her to climb quickly, her palms were burning from the bark scratching against her skin, and the bottoms of her feet felt raw as she reached the safest spot, and knowing that she was completely covered she finally let tears roll down her cheeks.
