Papers were scattered along Bucky's desk.
Days had gone by and life had to move on. Warner couldn't pinpoint the location the boat was going to be docking and the trail had gone cold. So instead of going home, instead of returning to the penthouse, he shared with his wife, where around every corner there was a memory of her, Bucky was sitting in his office downtown, sleeping on the counter against the wall. Life kept going, the mafia kept growing, and Bucky was rooted in his heartbreak.
What if he never saw Addison again?
The thought crossed into his mind and he dropped the pen he was holding, metal clattering against the glass before dropping to the floor and rolling away. The pain was debilitating, the ache in his chest never going away. His wedding band on his left ring finger sat as a reminder of all he had lost because Bucky didn't just lose his wife, he lost his heart, and his will to live, she was gone and there was nothing he could do to stop it. Addison's scream was branded into his brain, the fear that rattled her vocal cords sent a chill zipping up Bucky's spine. He was a shell of a man, hollow on the inside. And he was faking excitement and kindness, just to keep getting by.
A knock on his door sounded, his secretary popping her head in, careful to not upset him, "Mr. Barnes, your four o'clock is here."
"Send him in."
The familiar sound of chains and combat boots sounded across his tiled floor, a sound that would once irritate him, but now reminded him of the hell his wife came from. Anger and sadness flared in his chest once more. She had only gotten to experience life for less than a year before she was ripped away. And this time, Bucky was coming up empty-handed at every turn, he couldn't find her, Tillamook Bay had been vacant of her and the man she wrestled the gun from, eyes flickering over to the screen to double check she wasn't there. He waited with bated breath, hoping to see a glimpse of her blonde hair, only to come up empty-handed. The sound of his door creaking open tore Bucky's eyes away from his screen, meeting the steel eyes of Keegan, a manila folder in his right hand.
"This is what I could find," setting the folder down amongst the scattered papers and dropping into the leather chair in front of Bucky's desk, "Charles had most of her paperwork destroyed when that complex caught on fire, that's what I could find at headquarters, but I'll keep looking."
As soon as Bucky got back into New York, he called Keegan asking for all of Addison's family records. He was trying every angle, seeing who would be calling her back after so many years. Who hated her so much that they sent a team to torment her. "Did we ever find out who took the cargo plane?" Bucky leaned back in his office chair, the squeak reverberating around the glass windows and bouncing off the walls, the manila folder was opened and all it revealed was a sad family tree. Addison, Warner, Derek, and Lisa were the only ones listed, with offshoots of Warner's mom Diana.
"Emmett," that name caught Bucky's attention, his icy blue eyes landing on Keegan, "he's holed up in Jersey, some shit motel off the 287," Keegan reached into the pocket of his leather coat, tugging free a folded up piece of paper adding it to the pile on the desk, "the plane landed yesterday and one of my guys saw Emmett limping back to the hotel, looks like he had a broken foot or some shit."
"Who the fuck does Emmett know in Oregon?" Bucky reached for the paper, unfolding it and looking at the information. The Neptune Inn, Room 7, he knew where he was heading as soon as the sun sank below the horizon.
"He used to do business with the Oregon chapter of the Sons, but when I talked to the leader over there, he said there was no warrant out of Addison, they accepted she was untouchable so they never pushed for her to pay her dues," Keegan let out a long breath, "not that I would've let them, I would've barred it or I would've taken the bullet myself. I'm working every angle I've got Bucky, but her records are limited."
