"How was brunch?" I know it couldn't have gone too well. Sophia had come back early and I'd heard Amelia was back in town. That's never good.
"It was okay. Started off rough, but I think it went well."
"Oh. Okay."
"What's wrong? You sound upset."
"Yeah, well. You never give me details. About, you know..."
Sophia took off her coat and placed it on the futon in front of her, crossing her arms. "No, I'm not sure I do."
"Them. I don't know anything about you or your life before you were 20."
"Because I don't like to talk about it. You know that."
"I do, but I'm your fiancé now. I think I have some rights."
"All in due time," Sophia whispered as she clumsily dodged a kiss. "I should...I need to clean up, okay?"
I stroked my forehead. "Yeah, okay." Shit. The engagement was supposed to help solve things. It was supposed to mean our rough patch was finally over. Then why didn't it feel like that?
I gazed at Sophia's reflection. She was beautiful as ever. She was never not beautiful. Even when she was upset she was beautiful. She was upset now. She was playing with the ring on her finger. "Is the ring the wrong size?"
"No, the ring is perfect."
Then she said something I'd never had expected her to. She'd been so quiet I don't think she knew I'd have heard it. "Did you say something?"
"No, your ears are probably ringing."
"If you meant it, say it again, Soph."
"I told you, I didn't say anything."
But we both knew. We both knew what she had said: the ring is perfect. I'm not so sure about the fiancé.
