I got home late last night. That was before I knew I had a curfew. Now, I have to hear all about it. About how I'm going to be a kid with adult privileges. I don't know how long it's going to last but the homeless shelter's looking better every minute. I look over JC's shoulders to see a yawning Ollie. She raises her eyebrows in a 'pay attention' way. I move around the cereal in my bowl, the clinking of the spoon the only thing keeping me from rolling my eyes.
"So, ground rules have been laid. Now, tell me about your job."
"I'll literally just be getting coffee. That's it."
"Do you have any New Year's resolutions?"
I laugh at Jade. Which, I can see she is not very happy about. "Hell no."
"Why?"
"No one ever really follows that shit."
"Language," Ollie interrupts for the first time this morning. I smile a little as I see Jade wink at her.
"Ace, I've given you the whole 'get your act together' lecture. And you have given me the whole 'I'm a teenager I don't care about anything' routine. But, I realize you can't do that with us pestering you about your future. So... we have agreed to let you stay with us while you take your gap year."
I choke on my Cheerios. "Holy...guacamole," I finish as I see Ollie's eyes widen again. "I can stay here? Oh my God that's sick. Super cool of you guys."
"You're gonna have to pay rent, Ace."
"Not as cool," I say, pointing at Ollie, "But, I will take it."
Wow. I am officially living the life. Cool job, cool digs, cool-ish family. There's only one problem, though.
There's a baggie of pills stashed in my jeans pocket that's just calling my name.
