Heartbeat- chapter 1- Its me, Hi!

Taylor's POV

Hi, it's me! I'm Taylor and I'm about to tell you something really important:

Life is crazy, you know? That's all I can think of while staring at the ceiling.

Never ever in my life I thought I could end up in a prestigious college and then Med School. I'm the oldest daughter of a middle class divorced woman and we couldn't afford the costs of leaving my home state, Pensylvannia, to study in a big city and much less pay an unbelievable amount of money to study. So when I fell in love with medicine I started to search for public colleges.

But I was so good at school and won so many competitions my teacher got in contact with her friends, and that's when Harvard knew about me and  they offered me a 100% scholarship before I could even apply for It.

When you receive this kind of offer you take it in a heartbeat. I left my mom's house and lived in college dorms, and now, 6 years later (2 years of college and 4 of Med School),  I'm here, in my first apartment, in Boston, getting ready for my first day of work tomorrow. It's nerve wracking to think that now I'm responsible for lives. And even more when I thought about the speciality I choose: surgery.

Many fellow colleagues tried to disencourage me, saying I was way too fragile to be a surgeon, way too kind. But instead of getting scared this just made me more eager to get there, so you can imagine how much I screamed and cried when I was accepted in a great surgical intern program in William Grant Hospital, in Boston.

I know it's going to be rough, but I'm excited to prove my value and show everyone that you don't have to fit in a stereotype to be a great surgeon.

Meow

Oh, sorry, let me tell you: I'm a cat person, and I was feeling so alone here last week when I came to rent and organize the apartment...so I adopted a tiny blue-eyed baby cat. It was a dream I always had that became true. My mom never allowed me to have a cat at home because my brother is allergic, but now that I'm on my own I could do it and I'm utterly in love with him.

Moving to the edge of bed, I see my boy yawning, making me giggle.

– Hi Benji, good morning babe. Are you hungry?

– Meowww.

I can't help but giggle.

–Ok, mommy is going to feed you.

I pick him in my arms like a human baby since this is the way he prefers to travel and get out of my bedroom. In the kitchen I grab one of the food packets and put it in his bowl.

– Here, baby, it’s all yours. – I put him on the floor and boop his nose.

– Meow.– he looked at me as if he was thanking me and my heart melted.

– Oh my god you are the cutest little kitten in the whole wide world.– I smiled at him and he started to eat eagerly.

My stomach let out a roar.

– Well, I guess that’s my turn to eat, isn’t it Benji?

Of course he didn’t answer me and kept eating, so I rolled my eyes and prepared myself a bowl of oatmeal and strawberry.

Many people could say that it’s depressing and solitary: a young woman spending the whole day at home playing with her cat, watching TV, reading, and taking a walk. But the truth is that these silly moments bring me more happiness than hanging out with fake people.

I’ve never been a popular girl at school, I’m way too nerdy to be seen as cool, and honestly I couldn’t care less. I don’t really need friends to survive, I learned over the years that I'm the only one responsible for my happiness, so I don’t even bother trying to make friends with many people.
