Heartbeat chapter 49 – Tears and sweet heartbeats

September 1st

Taylor's POV

It's a cold morning in a cold hospital hallway. I'm mumbling a song in my head when a well known warm hand touches my shoulders.

– Hey babe.– I say to him, disguising my sadness.

– You are sad.– He didn't ask. He just knew, without me having to say a word.

– We lost a kid this morning. Car accident. And then I realized how cold this hospital is. The corridors are cold because we are cold. Dr Sherman just stood there in the waiting room and told the mom of this beautiful 8 yo boy would never be back home and left her broken.

I take a deep breath.

– I couldn't follow her. I stood there, frozen, watching that mom sobbing, and when she calmed down she asked me if she could see her child's body. And then I took her and explained the procedures and all the legal stuff. Then I came here. And as much pain I'm feeling I just can't bring myself to crying. I became cold too.

– No babe, you became professional. You are still a good person, you still care, you are right now thinking about this mom’s pain. You didn't become cold just because you learned to control your emotions.

I sigh.

– Thanks for your words. Are you arriving?– I ask him.

– Yep. I was going to find you to have breakfast with me before I start. We still have a half hour, what do you think?

– It’d be great. 

On the way there we find Jack and we sit together.

– Hey man, how are you doing? Still haven't heard from her?

– Nop. You know what? That 's ridiculous. If she doesn't call me today I'm going after her.

Jack and Maggie aren't talking to each other and he didn't tell us the reason. He just told us it's personal and we obviously agreed to not questioning him about but he's obviously hurt.

Hey guys!– Blake and Selena arrive to eat too. It's been a good few days since we last reunited like this.

The conversation goes smoothly until we see Maggie arriving at the cafeteria, certainly to talk to Jack. I hope they solve whatever issues they have.

Joe taps Jack shoulders and he sighs, seemingly relieved that she's finally here to talk to him but obviously concerned with the dark circles everyone can see under her eyes.

What the hell is going on?

– Hey guys.– She waves to us and we reply while Jack gets up. – Sorry to interrupt you guys. Jack can we talk?

– Sure.– He gives her a reassuring smile and offers his hand, treating her with kindness yet obviously upset.

As they walk away we disguise our curiosity by pretending to keep eating.

Jack’s POV

– Hey babe– I intertwined our hands as we sit on a bench.

– Jack, please forgive me for the way I treated you the other day. I was so scared. Fuck, I'm still scared.

I open my mouth to say I was sorry too when she shut up me with her delicate index finger.

– Please just listen to me. I thought A LOT about what to do and I realize I can't get an abortion. Not when I want to be a mom and I love this child's father and he's willing to help me. I realized I'm not alone. I realized I will never be prepared enough to be a mom so I said screw perfect planned universe, I'm having this babe. But I'm going to need you with me every step of the way.
Tears prick in my eyes.
