Nick spent 20 days locked in a tiny single cell. He only slept a few hours a day, hoping that every time he awoke and opened his eyes, he would wake up from the nightmare he was in. The gruel they fed him left his stomach in knots. He was only allowed 1 hour a day of fresh air, which he spent sitting in the grass looking up at the sky praying for God to morph him into a better man. He completely submitted himself to God and prayed that the sins he committed here on earth would be forgiven. He prayed that there would still be a place for him in the Kingdom of Heaven.
On his 21st day of lockdown, he got a visit from Mama Treet. Nick could barely look his mother in her eyes as she sat with her hands against the dirty glass window, reaching out and crying for her son.
"Oh, my Kirsnick. Are they hurting you in there? You don't look well." She cried.
"I'm aight momma. Please don't cry, you know it break me up to see you cryin' like dat." Nick said, holding his head down in shame while wearing his county orange jumpsuit.
"Your lawyer said that you will be out soon, as soon as they set your bail you know I'm coming to get you out of here baby." His mother spoke softly.
"I know mama. Don't worry 'bout me. How's Asia, did you talk to her?" Nick asked hesitantly.
"Deja talked to her, she's being held without bond." Mama Treet said sadly. Nick's heart sunk to his feet at the thought of his sweet fiancé being caged in and subjected to the filthy cold conditions of jail, especially since she was completely innocent of any wrongdoing towards Winston. She was the one who was harmed by him and still had no intention of hurting him or extracting revenge. Her heart and soul was pure, and she didn't deserve to be punished.
"Times up! Let's move on!" The supervising officer announced.
"Kirsnick, I love you. I'll see you real soon." Mama Treet said with tears still spilling from her eyes.
"I love you too mama." He said as he stood up and dragged his feet slowly back to his cell.Asia refused to eat or drink and couldn't sleep. By her 7th day of lockdown she was sent to the infirmary for dehydration, malnutrition and mental distress. She laid on the hard cardboard-like bed of the facility with an IV in her arm, yearning to die. She favored leaving her life behind rather than being left behind bars for another day. She feared that nobody would believe her innocence and that she would be left there to rot. Her faith was so frail that she couldn't even pray. On her 15th day of lockdown, she got a visit from Deja.
"Holy shit." Deja whispered as she fixed her eyes on her friend who appeared to be a least 15 pounds lighter. Her eyes had sunken into their sockets and her hair laid on top of her head like an old frayed mop.
"What the hell did they do to you?" Deja asked even though she was horrified to know the truth.
"They didn't do anything, I just gave up." Asia explained. Her voice was so hoarse from crying day and night that Deja could hardly make out what she was saying.
"Jesus Asia, please don't give up. I talked to your lawyer and he says he has some very promising evidence that could set you free from here."
"Oh, really?" Asia asked calmly, her mind was lost.
"Yes, really." Deja answered. The officer gave Deja the signal to wrap up her visit.
"I love you. We're going to get you out." Deja reassured her friend.
"What about Nick? Where is he? How is he?" Asia asked desperately.
"He's ok. Don't worry. Just think about what style wedding dress we gonna go shopping for when you get out of here." Deja smiled.
"Yeah..." Asia whispered. The thought of marrying Kirsnick made Asia express half a smile, even though she wasn't sure if that dream even still existed.
