NETEYAM'S POV I sat on the shore watching the waves make their way into the sand as I thought about how my life has been recently. It's been three weeks here in Awa'atlu and they've been absolutely miserable. I miss my home, the forest, I miss it so much. It feels awful to know I will never be able to return to the only place I've ever really loved. The place that made me truly happy.
A few things have been good though. I've made friends with the reef kids. Au'rai and I are close now, my feelings for her, as much as I try to push them away, only grow stronger each day. No matter how much our parents try to keep us apart and try to get us to spend time with each other's siblings, we always find a way to see one another.
Not a day goes by that I don't think about the kisses we shared a few weeks ago. I'll never be able to forget the feeling of her between my arms or the feeling of kissing her. I know it is wrong since I am technically promised to her sister, but no one can control what the heart wants. Besides Tsireya and Lo'ak have been the same, always sneaking away to see each other. But now here I was waiting for Tsireya since our parents had set up another 'date' I guess.
While I sat on the shore I heard footsteps approaching behind me.
"Hello" I said turning around expecting to see Tsireya but I turned only to see... Au'rai? What was she doing here?
"Au'rai?" I asked trying not to sound too excited "I thought you were supposed to spend time with my brother?" She took a seat next to me and smiled.
"Yeah I was supposed to but I convinced Tsireya to switch with me."
"How'd you convince her?" I laughed. I know Tsireya would hate to get in trouble if she got caught.
"I don't know if you know this or not, but Tsireya has a favorite brother and I'm sorry to say it's not you, friend" she teased me as she put her hand on my shoulder pretending to comfort me.
"Well that's okay" I said as I took a hold of her hand in mine "because I also have a favorite sister and it is not her" I smiled looking into her eyes making her giggle.
"So" she stood up "what are we going to do?"
"I know what we can do" I said as an idea popped into my head.
"What?"
I made a sound calling to my ikran who showed up in a matter of moments. I looked at Au'rai and saw that all the color drained from her face. She looked absolutely terrified. She quickly ran and hid behind me which made me laugh.
