Newsies oneshots

Spromeo // Deep Breaths

Romeo used to stutter. He tends to get speech delay when he speaks too quickly or when he starts off a sentence without thinking too much. Luckily, it doesn't happen too often. He's now super smooth and quick with words, perfect for selling, especially to girls who find him irresistibly cute, despite him dating Specs, it's a good strategy.

Once the newsies were having a little meeting on the floor of the lodging house, just talking. Romeo sat besides his boyfriend with Elmer on his other side. The conversation started off easy, talking about the sheepshead and the race they just saw, then it got to a new shop opening up, then the strike, then the window that has been broken for ages finally getting fixed. Romeo followed the conversion, thinking of anything he wanted to add.
"Finally, no more risking losing fingers to open the damn thing." Jack sighed, talking about the window, "Also, Barney, we know it's you who opens it at night."
"I get too hot-" Barney Peanuts frowned.
"Who broke it anyway?" Davey asked, it was broken before he came here,
"Buttons did." Race lied,
"Did not-" Buttons protested,
"Yes you did." Albert nodded,
"Yep." Mike agreed, all the other newsies joining in. Buttons pouted.
"Damn, how did it break?" Davey asked.

"Well," Romeo started, getting read to tell the story, "It was super cold outside so we wanted to close it, but it was f-" Romeo found himself stuck, having a speech delay on the word 'frozen', he repeated the word a million times in his head before trying again, "f-f-f-fro-" everybody was staring at him, he heard a small giggle from a younger newsie as he was trying his best to speak, "I-i-i can't say-"
"Yes you can," Specs said softly,
"Think about what you gonna say."
Romeo tried again "F-f-f-"
Some newsies lost patience and ignored him and continued to talk amongst eachother.
Specs looked at Romeo, giving him his full attention until he manages to speak, "Take a deep breath."
Romeo did and shut his eyes, he opened his mouth tried again but this time, not a word came out.

"Did you hit your head or something?" Elmer asked him (genuinely btw, not to be an asshole he was just worried)
But that comment hurt Romeo, he was already frustrated with himself, so he curled up into a ball and started crying, Specs was quick to hug him, "Don't give up darling, it's ok."
"I can't speak-"
"You can, come on, think of the word your trying to say and say it slowly."
Romeo sat up and breathed deeply,  he squeezed Specs hand and said slowly, "Frozen-"
"Hey!" Jack shouted to get everyone's attention back on Romeo,
"Frozen..." Romeo repeated, "The window was frozen shut. It wouldn't close so Rac- I mean, Buttons wents outside and punched it closed but it them went back through the wrong way and broke frame."
"Buttons you dick, you costs us all to pay the bill for the window." Race tisked,
"I didn't break it!"

Romeo looked at Specs who smiled at him as the warmly embraced, he was so lucky To have such a wonderful boyfriend.
