They left the Shrieking Shack through the tunnel. Crookshanks and Y/N's cat were leading the way out, while Lupin and Ron were bound to Pettigrew. Ron seemed to have taken his rat's true identity as a personal insult, so he volunteered to be bound to him so that Pettigrew would not escape. Snape was floating limply behind them, held up by his own wand, which was being pointed at him by Sirius. Harry, Y/N and Hermione led the rear.

'Do you know what this means?' said Black, turning to Harry. 'Turning Pettigrew in?'

'You're free,' said Harry quietly.

'Yes...' said Sirius. 'But, I don't know if anyone has told you, but I'm your godfather-'

'Yeah, I know,' said Harry.

'Well, your parents appointed me as your guardian,' said Sirius stiffly. 'If anything happened to them...'

Harry looked around at Sirius and watched him intently. Y/N knew what he was thinking.

'If you ever wanted a... a different home...' Sirius began. 'I'll understand, of course, if you want to stay at your aunt and uncle's-'

'What, come and live with you?' said Harry, gaping at his godfather. 'Leave the Dursleys?'

'Of course, I thought you wouldn't want to,' said Black quickly. 'I understand-'

'Are you mad?' exclaimed Harry, his voice shaking a bit. 'Of course I want to come and live with you!'

Sirius turned around to look at Harry; Snape's head was now scraping the low ceiling but Sirius didn't seem to mind.

'You mean it?' he said.

'Yeah, I mean it!' said Harry, grinning broadly.

Sirius' face broke into the first true smile Y/N had seen on it. He seemed ten years younger, his face shining.

Harry did not stop smiling until they were out of the tunnel. Crookshanks had darted up to put his paw on the knot, and the strange party left the tunnel and walked up the sloping lawns to the castle. Everything was dark except for the occasional flicker of a light from the school.

'One wrong move, Peter,' said Lupin, pointing his wand at Pettigrew's whimpering face.

Sirius suddenly looked around at Y/N, and he leaned down to whisper.

'The Maine Coon cat, it was you, right?'

Y/N looked around to make sure they were out of earshot before replying.

'Yeah, it was.'

'Incredible,' croaked Sirius. 'Never knew anyone could achieve that at such a young age...'

Y/N smiled at him. 'It was easier for me-'

Her voice died away. Lupin, Pettigrew and Ron had suddenly stopped. Snape's limp body bumped into them and Black suddenly flung out an arm to stop Harry, Y/N and Hermione. Y/N leaned sideways to have a look at the professor. He had gone rigid, his limbs shaking.

'What is it-?' Y/N began, but Hermione let out a gasp and pointed upward.

Y/N looked up. A cloud had shifted, and they were basking in the full moon's light. Y/N's heart dropped.

'He hasn't taken his potion!' gasped Y/N.

'Run,' said Sirius suddenly. 'Run, now!'

But they couldn't. Ron was still chained to Lupin and Pettigrew. Harry lunged forward but Sirius pushed him back.
