The morning of the first of September dawned crisp and golden as an apple. Though Y/N shut her eyes against the bright light seeping into the master bedroom, she knew it would not be long before she'd have to wake up. Harry, being Harry, was sound asleep despite the shining sunrays splayed across his face.

Almost as if on cue, a tiny screech sounded downstairs, rousing the sleepy couple. Seconds later footsteps thundered upstairs and the bedroom door flew open.

'MUM! DAD! DAAAAD!'

Harry jumped to his feet lightning fast, drawing his wand from the nightstand. Y/N followed suit, stumbling as she slipped her feet into her slippers.

'What is it, Lils?' Harry said sharply, pulling the blinds open so that he could have a better look at his daughter. 'What's wron-?'

Y/N blinked, her eyes adjusting to the sudden light in the room. Her eyes laid first on Harry, standing in front of her, then on their daughter, who was in tears.

It took Y/N a few seconds to realise what was wrong, and she had to swallow her sudden urge to laugh. Harry whipped around to face his wife, shaking from head to foot with laughter but quite silent. Y/N sighed deeply and sidestepped Harry to reach her daughter.

'Oh, Liliane,' she said, crouching down, 'what happened to your hair, sweetheart?'

For the poor girl's hair looked nothing like it had last night. Long strands that reached the lower back barely scraped the shoulders now, and bangs that were so horribly cut one would think a drunk hairdresser had done the job.

'Adrien!' sniffed Liliane. 'He- he cut it while I was asleep!'

'You said you wanted a new haircut for school,' said a tiny voice by the door.

Liliane's younger brother, Adrien, looked at his mother with wide green eyes, feigning innocence—or perhaps he really meant no harm, but at this age, Y/N could not tell whether he was sincere or playing naive.

The youngest L/N-Potter was the one who looked most like his mother, inheriting her H/C hair and scarlet highlights.

'Not by you!' snapped Liliane, tearful. 'It looks horrible! I can't go like this!'

'I thought it looked nice...' muttered Adrien, his hands behind his back.

'You're just jealous you're only going to start Hogwarts in four years,' said Liliane, wiping her tears.

'Lils...' Y/N began, but was interrupted by Adrien.

'No, I'm not!' the boy said defensively, now very upset.

Sighing deeply, Harry crouched down to be level with Adrien and pulled him closer by the hand.

'You have to apologise to your sister, Adrien,' said Harry gently.

'But I didn't mean...'

'I know, but she's pretty upset you cut her hair without permission,' Harry told him.

There was silence in the room for a while. Then, Adrien faced his sister and muttered an apology, not making eye contact.

'I didn't hear you,' huffed Liliane, crossing her arms.

'I said I'm sorry for cutting your hair without asking permission,' Adrien repeated, louder this time.

Liliane surveyed him for a moment, apparently deciding whether to accept his apology. Y/N gave her a look, and the girl sighed, relenting.
