The days after Hermione's confession about why she, Harry and Ron had been ignoring Y/N were some of the worst of Y/N's life.
Every time she did anything, every time she spoke to anyone, the nagging thought that she would join Voldemort, according to the prophecy, lurked in the back of her mind.
Y/N wanted desperately to convince Harry that the prophecy was not true, that it was not referring to her, but perhaps someone else. But who else was an Ignismagus, a Muggle-born, born on the first week of September and the same year Harry was?
There was nothing that could possibly refute the prophecy, but Y/N still refused to believe it.
The moment Ron had learnt that Hermione had told Y/N about the prophecy, he tracked his sister-like friend down and apologised profusely for ignoring her.
'I swear on Merlin's mightiest staff that I didn't believe a word of that prophecy,' said Ron. 'Like I said, Dumbledore is-'
'-barmy, I know, you said it a dozen times,' said Y/N, drained yet slightly amused.
Ron smiled guiltily at her.
'I'm really sorry-'
'I know, I know,' said Y/N. 'It's... fine, I guess.'
'I would've spoken to you earlier if it wasn't for Harry,' said Ron. 'You know how he gets...'
Y/N did not say anything, chewing on the inside of her cheek anxiously. Ron frowned slightly and patted Y/N on the shoulder.
'He'll come round,' he said quietly. 'He's not really telling us what's on his mind at all recently, but I can tell he doesn't want to believe what that prophecy said...'
Y/N shrugged.
'It's fine, Ron, I don't care about... that,' she lied, forcing a smile. 'Doesn't bother me.'
For a moment, Ron only stared at Y/N, then he smiled knowingly and shook his head.
'You're a terrible liar, you know,' he said. Y/N narrowed her eyes. 'You do care. And so does Harry.'
'He sure has trouble showing it,' Y/N laughed hoarsely.
Despite the fact Hermione and Ron were speaking to Y/N again, she found herself avoiding them even more. If she was going to betray them, she did not want to impose her presence on them, just to hurt them when the prophecy came to life...
These thoughts often turned into anger against Dumbledore. Why did he not tell Y/N? Why did he hide it away from her? And where was he all these days, when she wanted to find him and force him to show her the prophecy in full? When she wanted to rage and storm at him for keeping her in the dark?
But the last week of September came and passed, and October brought with it a rush of wind and cold that numbed the exposed fingers.
Halfway through the month came their first trip of the term to Hogsmeade. Y/N debated going in the first place, but when Hermione practically dragged her out of bed that morning, she accepted her fate and got ready for the trip.
They went down to breakfast to find Harry and Ron laughing about something. Y/N sat opposite Ron, who was still grinning. Harry spared one glance at Y/N before staring down at his bowl of cereal.
'What's so amusing?' Hermione asked, squeezing into a seat next to Y/N.
'I was sleeping, right, and there was this flash of light and I wake up to see myself dangling upside down in midair!' he told her, still chortling.
