Maddie Pov
My brother opened the door to my room and walked inside, sitting next to me and handing me a cupcake with a candle on it.
"Happy birthday." He says. "what's wrong?"
I sat in silence, staring at the cupcake.
"Nothing.."
"You can tell me anything."
"It's stupid and a waste of time."
"Most stupid things aren't a waste of time," he quoted mom. His voice glitched for a split second. "Our mother always said that."
"It's nothing."
He stared at me, "Maddie."
it started to glitch.
"I don't want him to choose." I said. "I just don't want them together."
"Alright. But if he does choose her or whatever, he's an idiot. You are the smartest and most talented child I have ever met."
"All boys are dumb." Billy told me.
"But you are a boy," I giggled.
"Well, I can be dumb." His voice glitched again.
"I don't think you are." I said with a smile. "I want to be like you, just not mean to everyone and not so judgmental —"
I cut out and it skipped to Billy saying, "We stick together no matter what." It skipped again, now we were listening to the song.
And If I only could I'd make a deal with God And I'd get him to swap our places
It glitched and my dad was in the room yelling at us and Susan was struggling to hold him back. Everything was slowly glitching and getting replaced with dark clouds or dust, and max and I appeared. It was after Billy's death, her mom and my dad just divorced. We had just got a new trailer, it was terrible. Susan had been working two jobs, almost being drunk all the time. I turned on Running Up that Hill by Kate Bush. We were both singing it. Just like Billy and I did.
Now the room grew red and dark, it was hot. I looked around, there was this circle in the distance, I could see the beach they were on. I could see my mom and Billy. I started to run towards them. They were walking away now. "Wait!" I yelled out. "Mom! Mom!"
I ran and ran. "Billy! Mom?!"
They never stopped or turned. I was running out of breath, panting, I fell to my knees. "Don't leave me."
I then woke up, the sun was bright. I sat up and my lamp was floating. So were the clothes that were on the floor, my shoes. I gasped and suddenly everything dropped.
I laid back down, processing it. I'm just dreaming. I stared at the ceiling for a bit and closed my eyes. A dream.
I turned my head to my clock. Shit. I got up quickly and got ready. I put on my headphones and ran outside, I rode my bike to mikes house and waited for him outside. I took out my journal and started to write.
One for Wills birthday and one to check on Eleven, I wrote a letter almost everyday but I rarely ever sent them.
Things were different now. Everything had changed. Lucas was now trying to be popular and Dustin and Mike joined the hellfire club with this guy. Mike ran outside in his Hellfire shirt.
"Finally." I said as I got up and we got on our bikes and went to school.
I had just finished a therapy session, we basically sat in silence the whole time. I hated answering her questions. I hated talking about it.
I went to the changing rooms and changed into my cheer outfit as I started a conversation with my friend Chrissy. She was super sweet, and pretty. She had the most amazing smile. I felt bad for her because of the stuff with her mom. Chrissy and I began hanging out when I tried out for the cheer team. She's a year older than me. She has this boyfriend Jason, they've been dating for a few months.
I had a crush on Chrissy in middle school, should I mention we kissed before her and Jason got together?
Now we were at the basketball game. We had just finished the routine, Chrissy and I smiled at each other as we walked to the side lines. We cheered as the boys came out.
Chrissy's boyfriend started a speech. "Think of Jack," he said. "Think of Melissa."
"Think of Heather," he went on.
"Think of Billy," he said. I put my head slightly down. Chrissy touched my hand in a way to comfort me, I looked at her and she gave me her beautiful smile. I could feel all eyes on me.
"Think about our heroic police chief, Jim Hopper." Everyone turned their head back to him. And he went on. Why did he have to mention Billy in a basketball speech? I've always wanted to punch him, this just made me want to more.
Lately I have felt so angry for no reason, I don't know what's happening to me.
Mike and Dustin ran towards me,"Maddie!"
"Hey."
"Can you fill in for hellfire tonight? The campaign, it's at the school."
"No." I said and walked away.
"Maddie!" They ran towards me.
"We understand you're mad. For what we did. But we need you." Mike said
"No. You are terrible friends!"
"What did we do?" Dustin whispered to Mike.
"You both joined another D&D club!"
They swore to Will they wouldn't..
He stared at me confused, I rolled my eyes. "I have cheer tonight, so I wouldn't be able to make it."
"Good Luck." I told Lucas before me and him entered the gym.
"Thanks." He said as he looked around.
"She's not here." I wanted to say but I didn't. Tammy Thompson was singing, she sounded like a muppet. I stared at Lucas who was on the bench as they began to play. I looked at Robin and Steve in the crowd. No Dustin or Mike.
They were losing, they put Lucas in and began to play again. Chrissy's boyfriend took a shot.
Missed.
I watched as Lucas grabbed the ball and went back, dribbling it. He jumped and threw it. The time was running out. Everyone stood up and watched. It was like everything was in slow motion.
The ball made it in the hoop, everyone started to yell. I started to cheer. Me and the other cheer leaders and basketball players ran up to Lucas, yelling and cheering. I clapped for him. After it calmed down, he stared at me with a huge smile on his face. He stepped closer towards me and picked me up as he hugged me,"I did it!"
