The two had had their breakfast and were slumped on the couch, watching TV mindlessly. Dan couldn't stop glancing at Phil. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. Phil's eyes were glued to the television to even notice Dan's awkwardness.
"Can-can I stay here?".
For Dan, it felt like word vomit. He just couldn't hold it back, and he couldn't understand why.
"Yeah, sure. Anything going on at home or-?". Dan had a great life at home. His parents were happily married, his dad wasn't a drunk, abusive alcoholic. Absolutely nothing wrong. "I guess I need a break from my parents." Dan lied, biting his lip.
"Ah, well, is there anything I can do? All those bruises look agonising." Phil asked, concerned.
Dan didn't want to bother him, but at the same time, he felt his body aching all over. "Could you give me a bag of frozen peas?". Dan asked. "Please.". Phil nodded, got up off the couch, and headed over to the freezer to retrieve the cold bag of peas. Phil gave Dan the peas, and watched him. Dan held the bag to his black eye, which eased the pain. Dan thumbs-up'd Phil, who looked back at him with a pleased smile.
And for some reason, the smile made Dan feel like he was melting. There was just something so lovely about Phil. Was it his wide light blue eyes? Was it his courtesy? There were so many features that Dan seemed to find so appealing about Phil. Wait... He couldn't be in love with Phil. He barely knew him for a start, and for all Dan knew, Phil was probably straight. Most likely straight and had a girlfriend. Dan fought the thoughts as hard as he could, but he was losing the battle.
Dan was falling in love with Phil.
"Why don't we get to know each other better?" Phil asked. Dan snapped out of his daydream gaze, and focused on Phil. "Huh? Oh, yeah, okay." Dan answered, beaming like a idiot.
The two began to question each other.
"Okay. Age?" Phil asked.
"16. You?".
"18.".
"Favourite colour and favourite band?" Dan asked.
"Favourite colour: blue, and favourite band: Muse-.".
"Oh my god, you like Muse? Muse are also my favourite band!" Dan squealed, almost jumping off the couch. Phil laughed at Dan's excitement, then nodded. The two discussed their favourite songs and albums by Muse for an hour. And everything Phil had to say about Muse and their music, Dan loved. No, every word Phil said Dan loved.
Phil stared at his bruises and scratches on Dan's skin, and closed his eyes. "Your parents might be worried." Phil said, letting out a tiny sigh. Dan knew his parents would be worried, but right now, he called the house of a guy he only knew for 3 hours 'home'. Dan had to go however, and he knew it.
"Hey, Phil, can I have your number?". Without answering; Phil walked over to a drawer and got out a red and black polkadot notepad and biro pen. He scribbled down his digits, ripped the paper off, and handed it to Dan.
"Call whenever. Do you want a ride?"
"That would be great, thanks." Dan answered. He didn't know where Phil's flat was and how far it was from his own house.
Dan gave his address and Phil entered it into the navigator. The journey was quiet. No one spoke. And when they had arrived at Dan's house, he regretted not speaking.
"Thank-you." Dan waved at Phil, then watched him drive far into the distance. Dan groaned when he realised the big guilt speech he was going to get from his mum. Dan opened the door to find his mum and dad's suitcases sitting in front of the stairs.
