Kate and William had not been able to speak to their firstborn. For the first two weeks they were unable to contact her as she did not answer any of their calls or messages, but eventually she did respond. All three knew they had to talk, but none of them seemed willing to take the first step.
—Hi sweetie— said the brunette as she saw her daughter's face in the FaceTime call.
—Hi mum. Hi dad—she greeted with a smile as she waved her right hand from side to side —You'll make it to the festival, right?
—We wouldn't miss it for the world— replied her father causing the teenager to smile. She was very excited about the festival as it was the first time she would be doing a solo and she wanted her whole family there.
The days in Boston went by quite quickly. They visited many places including several charities and even a basketball game. On the last day they went to the Eartshot price gala, which unfortunately took longer than expected. Catherine looked at her husband's watch for the tenth time in five minutes as she moved her right leg up and down, indicating that she wanted to get out of there.
—Darling, calm down— the prince said, trying to remain calm.
—I can't fail her in this— she replied with tears in her eyes. If they didn't make it to the festival on time, her firstborn would never forgive her.
The minutes passed like hours before they finally got out of there to run to their hotel room and take the quickest shower in the world before boarding their private plane.
—We won't make it in time— said Kate, seeing that it was two in the morning and they would arrive in London at twelve in the morning, leaving them only half an hour to get to the boarding school. William sighed heavily, knowing that his wife was right.
—She'll understand— he commented, not so convinced. They decided not to say anything yet, as they didn't want her to be disappointed when she woke up.
It was an hour before the couple were due to land in London and they received a call from Victoria. Both of their hands began to shake.
—Is it true that you won't make it?— asked Victoria as she sobbed silently, causing her parents' hearts to break into pieces.
—I'm so sorry, darling— apologised the woman.
—It's okay, you have homework to do. It's not your fault— she said sympathetically, not wanting to make her parents feel bad. She knew they wanted to be there, although there was something in the back of her mind that always told her it was because they didn't love her and that if it had been one of her siblings they would have moved heaven and earth to be with them. She tried to get those bad thoughts out of her head but it was impossible.
Victoria was in front of the mirror surrounded by LED lights trying to make the best dancer's chignon. She took a deep breath as she needed to concentrate and the noise of the people in the audience coming into the theatre didn't help.
—Do you need backup?— asked her grandmother Carole, approaching her from behind. The princess nodded in relief and let her grandmother comb her hair.
—Perfect— she announced, stepping back a little to see it from a different perspective.
—Thank you— thanked the teenager with a smile, but her eyes showed her sadness. Her mother should have done her hair.
—Oh my girl— murmured the woman giving her a big hug while caressing her back in consolation.
It was five minutes before the festival was due to start and there was no sign of the Prince and Princess of Wales. Victoria took a deep breath, trying to make her bad thoughts disappear until the roaring sound of a helicopter reached her ears.
She quickly ran to a window to see that the helicopter landing in the boarding school grounds was an army helicopter. A big smile appeared on his face as he watched his parents run towards the entrance. It was obvious that they had not changed their clothes for hours and the dark circles under their eyes showed how worried they were about not arriving on time. The princess came out onto the stage and could hear her whole family cheering her name. She looked up at them and smiled a big smile as she saw her parents, siblings, her four grandparents and her maternal aunts and uncles there. He gave one of the best performances of his life, making everyone proud.
—I told you I wouldn't miss it— Victoria murmured into her mother's arms —I told you I wouldn't miss it— she replied, giving her a kiss on the forehead —Thank you. I love you— she said with a smile and a kiss on her cheek, causing the Duchess's tears to flow uncontrollably. It had been a long time since her daughter had told her that she loved her. They still had a lot to talk about, but that was a good start. —I love you too.
