Donghua’s POV

I was holding her hand as she tried to remove my clothes…
Now I understood what a heat cycle really meant.

I looked into her eyes, but before I could say anything, she suddenly fainted. Her body was burning like fire.
I immediately picked her up in bridal style and ran out of the house. I stopped a passing woman and asked, “Is there a lake, river, or pond nearby?”

She pointed toward the forest.
“There’s a waterfall deep inside.”

I didn’t waste a second. Her body temperature was climbing dangerously. I carried her into the woods. After a while, I heard it—running water. A cascade.

I stepped into the waterfall with her still in my arms, pressing her body close to mine to support her weight as I slowly soaked her in the icy stream.

Gradually, her fever cooled.

She began to stir. Then opened her eyes.

“Where are we, Djuin...? I remember we were inside the house. Why are we here? What happened?”

I smiled gently.
“Your body temperature spiked. I brought you here to cool down. You can relax. Don’t worry—I won’t eat you, Xiaojiu.”

I don’t know why I called her that. It just slipped out. Maybe it’s one of the names her family calls her… I think Zhiyan once said it. He told me she was his niece.

But the moment I said it, she looked at me in fear.

Why? Why was she scared of me?

I suddenly felt hurt. For the first time, someone’s expression… hurt me.

It must be because she saved me. That’s all. Just a passing sentiment.

She then suddenly cried out, “Djuin, I think there’s a snake in the waterfall! Ahh, Djuin! Get up—it’s a snake!”

She grabbed my hand and pulled me, panicking.
But as I looked at her, my mind went blank.

Her wet clothes were sticking to her like a second skin.

Heat surged in my veins. I started to feel… aroused. She looked ethereal, soaked and shivering in my arms.

She kept tugging my hand, speaking urgently. Then she turned to go.

I stopped her.

Leaning close to her ear, I whispered,
“I saw a shadow earlier—a man. I think he’s still nearby. Your dress… it’s clinging to you. Please don’t turn around. Okay?”

She froze, then slowly understood. Her cheeks flushed a deep red, spreading down her neck. Her dress had loosened while sitting in the water. She must be blushing all over.

I couldn’t help but smile.

Then I picked her up again, bridal style. She gasped, stunned by my sudden action.

But I didn’t want anyone else to look at her.

I carried her back to the house the tribe had given us.
We didn’t talk much after that. We got a little busy with the preparations for the festival that night.

Fengjiu’s POV

Later that evening, we sat near the bonfire. Music echoed all around—soft, celebratory.

I could feel Djuin’s eyes on me. But I pretended I didn’t.

He said suddenly, “Such a lovely atmosphere, right?”

I looked at him, meeting his gaze. Something in his eyes made my heart shift.
I nodded with a soft smile.

But curiosity burned inside me.
